Job description
Kitsap Conservation District (KCD) has worked with individuals and communities to conserve natural resources and manage water quality, soils, and natural habitats for the benefit of the public for over 70 years. KCD provides technical, financial, and educational resources to meet the needs of the local landowner for the conservation of natural resources. Kitsap county residents have shown an interest in preserving the health of watershed they live in. The Low Impact Development (LID) / Rain Garden Program provides the funding and assistance to install LID practices like rain gardens, cisterns, swales and soakage trenches to manage storm water. Storm water runoff is rain that falls on paved surfaces such as streets, parking areas, rooftops or other developed land. The water picks up pollutants like oil and gas, heavy metals, fertilizers, and animal waste. It then flows into nearby gutters and storm drains, and from there into local waterways including streams, lakes, rivers and eventually Puget Sound. Salmon play an integral part of Pacific Northwest tribal religion, culture, and physical sustenance. Polluted storm water impacts the health of juvenile and adult Coho salmon so managing storm water with LID practices supports native culture and foodways. The Member will assist in planning and installing LID practices and provide environmental education to farm, forest, and residential landowners on the importance of storm water management. They will also support other District program offerings to community members and build relationships with partner organizations and engage underserved groups with environmental programming. This is an Americorps national service position. This position is contingent upon funding and open until filled.

Member Duties : The Kitsap Conservation District Low Impact Development (LID) / Rain Garden Specialist position will assist in planning, implementing and maintenance of low-impact development projects and educate community members on the importance of managing storm water for watershed health. They will do this by assisting with the installation of LID practices like rain gardens, cisterns, swales and soakage trenches and other LID solutions to manage run-off and enhance water quality. Community partners around Puget Sound are over half way to their goal of 12,000 rain gardens. Serving at KCD this position is part of soaking up 160 million gallons of polluted storm water runoff to protect our waterways! Additionally, the position will assist in the District’s other environmental programs such as the native plant sale, restoring riparian and salmon habitat, participate in community education and outreach, and volunteer recruitment.
