Full Salary Range: Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $32.83 to $39.53/hr. The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $32.83 to $33.63/hr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, is responsible for the overall management, supervision, development, maintenance and operation of the 3D/Sculpture areas and Metal Shop. Monitors the use of the Metal Fabrication Shop, yards and all 3D/Sculpture areas for the purposes of ensuring proper and safe use of the Metal Fabrication Shop, yards, 3D/Sculpture areas, and equipment by students, staff, and faculty. Keeps Metal Fabrication Shop, yards, 3D/Sculpture areas stocked with necessary supplies and materials for course instruction and special projects. Ensures shop equipment is in good operating order. Assists the Facilities Manager with tracking inventory, by keeping materials records up to date. Under the supervision of the Facilities Manager conducts demonstrations on specialized 3D techniques (i.e. molten/sheet metal fabrication, welding, milling, light construction, installation, casting, sewing, ceramics, and any other 3d techniques.) for undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty. Complies with safety standards regarding general Metal Fabrication Shop use and safe use of materials and equipment. Functions as a team member with other Arts facilities staff. Cross trains in other Arts facilities areas in order to be able to cover other these areas as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related area or equivalent experience and/or training.
  • Ability to understand and apply University and Department policies and procedures to specific situations.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks.
  • Communication - An ability to communicate verbally, graphically, and in writing.
  • Organizational abilities including maintaining a timeline and schedule for all manner of activities.
  • Relevant knowledge and abilities to create, develop, and track inventory and recordkeeping.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years experience or combination of experience, training and education, preferably in a school or business setting.
  • Knowledge of foundry, metal shop practices.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Maintain a valid CA driver’s license, a clean DMV record and enrollment in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

Supervisor of Shop and Personnel 40%

The 3D/Sculpture and Metal Shop Supervisor administers the activity and training of all personnel involved in use of the departmental mechanical shop and equipment including sheet metal fabrication, oxy/acetylene welding, cutting and brazing, MIG and TIG welding, plasma cutting, and use of spot welder, milling machine, band saw, cold saw, abrasive chop saw, sander, Schedules the Metal Fabrication Shop, yard, and all 3D/Sculpture areas to accommodate classes. Provides demonstrations to graduate, undergraduate staff, and faculty users on the basic use the Metal Fabrication Shop equipment (including foundry, welding, sheet metal fabrication, cutting and brazing, plasma cutting, and use of spot welder, milling machine, band saw, cold saw, abrasive chop saw, sander, sandblaster, etc.) with special emphasis on safety rules and safe practices. Works with faculty on the upkeep and preparation of 3D class rooms including maintenance, patch and paint, furniture organization, etc. Provides demonstrations and help for 3D installations. Cross trains with other Arts Facilities staff in order to work in and cover in other areas and shops when needed. Supports all courses and Arts department personnel, as well as College of Creative Studies, and MAT art students and faculty. Under the supervision of the Arts Facilities Manager, monitors the use of the Metal Fabrication Shop to ensure the proper and safe use of the shop and its equipment. Responsible for keeping the Metal Fabrication Shop, yard, and all 3D/Sculpture areas in good production condition. Notifies the Facilities Manager of, and assists as directed, with any needed repairs of the machinery, Metal Fabrication Shop equipment, and furniture. Keeps the Metal Fabrication Shop, yard, and all 3D/Sculpture areas stocked with the necessary supplies and materials for course instruction and special projects. Responsible for keeping accurate records, including material costs, job requests, equipment costs, etc. for research and lab fee budgets.

Fabricating 10%

Assists as needed, under supervision, with the fabrication and installation of student projects which require basic technical skills, including fixtures and prototypes, assembly, testing, trouble-shooting requiring. Researches and works with exotic, contemporary and innovative materials such as exotic metals/materials, specialty products, uncommon adhesives, fasteners, finishes, etc. and post consumables. Welding and sheet metal fabrication knowledge includes: arc and tungsten inert gas processes, soldering and braising. Plasma. Bending, cutting, and pinching for common and specialty metals. Casting knowledge includes design and fabrication of molds for metal, ceramic, wax, plastic and rubber techniques.

Design, Consultation and Engineering 20%

Consults with faculty members, professional research staff, graduate students, and other staff to facilitate design and construction of simple projects and installations. Is involved in all stages of projects from conceptualization through design, selection of materials and components, layout, fabrication, and assembly. Works collaboratively and independently from rough drafts, sketches, or verbal instructions. Prepares drawings or sketches when necessary to assist mechanicians in fabricating parts. Prepares digital and analog drawings or sketches when necessary to assist faculty, staff and students in fabricating parts. Under supervision of Facilities Manager works as a team member with other facilities staff on larger projects, multi material/technique projects conceptual projects, departmental facilities projects, etc. proposed by supervisor, department, faculty or students. Provides cost estimates to faculty and students for proposed products. Researches commercially built equipment and tools to determine adequacy and efficiency for contemporary art techniques.

Purchasing/Distribution of Supplies/Inventory 20%

Orders operational supplies and materials for 3D/Metal Shop [welding supplies, paint fasteners, casting materials, sheet metal and misc. 3D materials]. Recommends and implements health and safety procedures which are related to this equipment and supplies. May be required to pick-up materials from local vendors [Goleta & Santa Barbara area]. Purchases other small items and materials for the Metal Fabrication Shop, yard, and all 3D/Sculpture areas. Orders and distributes materials to students. Assists faculty with research related purchases. Orders, and receives materials. May be required to pick-up materials from local vendors in the Goleta and Santa Barbara area. Responsible for keeping accurate records, including materials cost estimates, job requests, receipts of equipment purchases, etc. for research and lab fee budgets. Assists Facilities Manager with tracking inventory of equipment, tooling, and other supplies for the Metal Fabrication Shop, yard, and all 3D/Sculpture areas.

Hazard Communication Coordinator 5%

Serves as liaison with department DSR and Environmental Health and Safety to implement and maintain a viable Hazard Communication Program in the department in compliance with campus and federal regulations which include: Coordinator of equipment, shop safety, Coordinator of chemical waste, MSDS, emergency action and fire prevention programs. Recommends and implements health and safety procedures which are related to the Metal Fabrication Shop, yard, and all 3D/Sculpture area equipment and supplies. Develops and administers both digital and paper safety tests for safety and liability matters in the shop.
