About the Department:

The mission of the University Advising Center (UAC) is to partner with pre-major students as they take ownership of their academic experiences at SMU and develop independent informed decision-making skills.

Job Summary:

This position will serve as an academic advisor to the University pre-major (undeclared) students. UAC advisors work with SMU students until the point of major declaration.


Essential Functions:

  • Advise students on academic and related matters. Guide students in selection of courses, assist students in major exploration and selection, monitor progress of advisees towards the fulfillment of academic goals and requirements, maintain knowledge of academic programs, regulations and procedures, counsel students on academic probation.

  • Counsel students who are exploring majors, students on academic probation and/or who need additional guidance and support, and connect students to campus resources. Serve as a resource/liaison to other campus offices and academic departments.
  • Serve on UAC committees and working groups.

  • Position requires some evening and weekend work during summer orientation.


Qualifications


Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree is preferred.

A minimum of two years’ work experience in an academic setting or related experience is required.

Some experience in academic advising, teaching, higher education, and/or counseling is highly desirable

Work experience in a four year traditional higher education environment is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a diverse population of students, parents, staff and faculty. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. A strong customer service orientation is essential.

Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks. Must also demonstrate strong problem solving skills with the ability to identify, analyze problems and devise solutions. The ability to work independently and collaboratively with others is essential.

Candidate must possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (e.g. Outlook Word and Excel). A strong focus on attention to detail is required.
