The Opportunity:
The University of Central Florida (UCF) School of Politics, Security, and International Affairs (SPSIA) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Academic Advisor III. The Academic Advisor III will serve as the director of the SPSIA Advising Office and provide comprehensive advising services to undergraduate students. This position will manage school study abroad and online programs and support other school-wide initiatives. The position will provide recommendations and present solutions to the School Director and faculty administrators with regard to undergraduate programs, policies, and areas of concern. The position will serve as the School scheduler, and act in a broad capacity to support the school in the areas of student engagement via various efforts. The Academic Advisor III will report to the School Director and work closely with the College of Sciences (COS) advising office.

Responsibilities:
  • Direct the SPSIA Advising Office and work closely with SPSIA Undergraduate Program Coordinator.
  • Serve as a professional advisor for all undergraduate programs. Provide comprehensive advising, including study abroad, career, pre-law, graduate school, internship, and professional development. Utilize holistic advising to best serve students' academic and career goals.
  • Help SPSIA Director with scheduling.
  • Act as a Director designee. Enforce school policies and procedures including, but not limited to, internships, research, overrides, and substitutions.
  • Review and recommend curriculum and course changes to the undergraduate faculty coordinator and director. Create and implement processes based on program requirements and program policies.
  • Develop and coordinate student-focused career and academic events. Work with faculty and university offices to design targeted and impactful workshops and events.
  • Represent the school's interests at university and college meetings and by serving on committees. Monitor and inform school administrators regarding legislative and policy changes that impact undergraduate programs, students, and related initiatives.
  • Collect and maintain data on undergraduate programs and student success.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student-related data (FERPA).
  • Perform outreach and recruitment when appropriate.
  • Provide a core role in developing additional study abroad opportunities and exchange programs in collaboration with UCF Global.
  • Backup to Graduate Admissions Coordinator and graduate program support.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree and 1+ year.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience as an academic advisor working directly with UCF students.
  • Familiarity with the student body of SPSIA and UCF.
  • Proved ability to make autonomous and informed decisions regarding student advising.
  • In-depth knowledge of SPSIA programming, university, and college policy.
