POSITION SUMMARY
The Global Exploration Operations Team at Hess focuses on operations geology, geohazards and pore pressure/wellbore stability analysis and formation evaluation/subsurface data acquisition planning and execution. The Lead Operations Geologist is a multidisciplinary role requiring knowledge of Geology, Geophysics and Drilling Engineering experience. Hess is seeking a candidate to coordinate Operations Geology to support the design and execution of our operated offshore wells as well as provide related support to Exploration and Production Geoscience.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Act as cross-functional focal point for developing the Geological program from initial well
statement of requirements (SoR), plus other products from Drilling, i.e. Drilling Plan, Schedules,
plus other defined subsurface objectives, deliverables and milestones, (Geo Ops Manual). This
includes:
o Wellsite geology and mudlogging and sampling plan and procedures, coring is
applicable.
o LWD and wireline logging plans (defined along with Team Petrophysicist).
o Acting on behalf of the Project Owner or Asset Resource (i.e. Exploration or Subsurface
- Coordinate with Well Service Contractors i.e. Mudlogging, LWD or wireline plus Hess Drilling
Operations and Logistic Teams in order to ensure all equipment and personnel are ready for
- Closely communicate/coordinate with Hess Subsurface Operations Senior Manager, Team
Petrophysicists and Exploration/Production Geologists for the well, along with other defined
stakeholders, in order to monitor, update and control wellsite geological operations activities
and data acquisition as per plan or make timely decision and adjustment according to new
- Closely communicate/coordinate with Wellsite Geologists and Well Service Contractors to
ensure the accuracy, reliability and timeliness of data acquired at wellsite in accordance with the
geological program and Hess standard and contractual terms & conditions before, during and
after drilling.
- Provide support, supervision and technical recommendations to the Wellsite Geologists during
the data acquisition operations, including adjustment to program based on new data or well
conditions if required.
- Monitor & evaluate the performance of contractors and submit, if required, a performance
- Line responsibility for consultant well site geology team.
- Coordinate with Consultant Wellsite Geologists and Well Service Contractors to ensure that all
geological data/information such as digital data, logs, rock samples, fluid samples, etc. are
obtained as per specified program and are delivered to the final destination when the well is
completed i.e. laboratories, geological storage warehouse/partners/ government agencies. For
digital data, coordinate delivery of data to real time streaming and FTP sites such as PetroVue,
- Routinely monitor and update well results to the Drilling and Asset Resource group responsible
for the well. Inform any abnormalities to them and discuss on the way forward. Correlate all
relevant data in the form of routine daily geological reports, i.e:
o In liaison with Wellsite Geologist, agree the format of daily geological reports, mud logs,
formation evaluation logs, lithological/composite logs, etc.
o Follow up and monitor all daily geological reports, including sample report, drilling activity
report, etc. contributing to the reliability and accuracy of the data acquisition.
o Interact with the drilling and Asset Resource team to analyze and evaluate the drilling
- Conduct final subsurface data studies and analyses and compile and disseminate final well
geological and completion reports and presentation products for post drilling assessment,
discovery reports or other reports and presentations required by both Hess, partners and
external agencies. Contribute to G&G post well studies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience
- Offshore Deepwater Drilling experience, GoM preferred.
- 15+ Years of experience with minimum 10 years in active Subsurface or Operations focused
role.
- Foundation in exploration and development geoscience as a business unit practitioner.
- Experience in wellbore design, permitting and other drilling engineering exposure.
- Knowledge of Geologix or other Lithological/Mud/Composite well log plotting software is a plus
- Appreciation of PPFG/Shallow Hazards/GeoHazards evaluation and monitoring and to
- Liaison with Global exploration/production/operations groups, plus external sources (i.e
- Ability and willingness to supervise and train foundation and junior geologists in geological
operation related topics i.e. mud logging technology & practices, open hole wireline data
acquisition & LWD technology & practices, basic drilling operations & related services, reporting
& data gathering.
Education, Training & Certifications:
Bachelors in Geoscience (Masters Degree and/or PhD in Geoscience preferred)
