Job description
  • The Data Scientist role is responsible for building tools that provide our Operational Leaders the means to make more data-driven decisions. The Data Scientist has a vast skillset that includes strong data cleansing, data visualization and modeling skills but also familiar with application development, agile, project management, ETL processes, code development toolsets and financial revenue forecasting. As an Associate Data Scientist, typically they will not have all the key skills outlined below but will have exposure and will develop them as they are onboarded. The Associate Data Scientist will learn from a senior mentor on the team, both Data Science and business aspects of the role.

Job Duties

  • Develop and maintain ETL processes to ensure high-quality data and efficient data flows
  • Develop and maintain Shiny apps for data visualization and analytics
  • Work with business stakeholders to understand their needs and design data solutions that support decision-making
  • Analyze complex datasets to identify trends and patterns, and provide insights that drive business growth
  • Creates advanced data models and high-quality analyses for all aspects of our business to discover insights, provide actionable recommendations, and drive outcomes
  • Ability to utilize machine learning and develop predictive models like decision trees and regression.
  • Define and implement new statistical or other mathematical methodologies for specific models or analyses
  • Communicate insights and recommendations to stakeholders through data visualizations, reports, and presentations
  • Stay abreast to how Data Science is evolving; incorporate and share new methodologies, trends, tools and techniques that can make our teams more efficient and/or add business value
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, math, statistics, physics, biology, chemistry or electrical engineering
  • Less than three years relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience using one of R, Python, C, C++, Java, or JavaScript
  • Proficiency in SQL for data manipulation and querying
  • Experience using platforms such as Snowflake, MapReduce, Hadoop, Hive, MySQL, etc.
  • Experience with business intelligence and data analytics tools such as Shiny, PowerBI, Tableau
  • Proficient technical writing and public speaking skills
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques and when they should be used.
  • Familiarity with statistical and data mining techniques and when it is appropriate to use them.
  • Strong problem-solving skills

Key Skills

  • Programming Skills – knowledge of statistical programming languages like R, Python , and database query languages like SQL . Familiarity with Scala, Java , or C++ is an added advantage.
  • Statistics – Good applied statistical skills, including knowledge of statistical tests, distributions, regression, maximum likelihood estimators, etc.
  • Machine Learning – good knowledge of machine learning methods like k-Nearest Neighbors, Naive Bayes, SVM, Decision Forests.
  • Strong Math Skills (Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra) - understanding the fundamentals of Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra is important as they form the basis of a lot of predictive performance or algorithm optimization techniques.
  • Data Wrangling – proficiency in handling imperfections in data is an important aspect of a data scientist job description.
  • Experience with Data Visualization Tools like matplotlib, ggplot, plotly, d3.js., Tableau that help to visually encode data
  • Excellent Communication Skills – ability to describe findings to a technical and non-technical audience.
  • Strong Software Engineering Background – preference to Shiny
  • Agile – experience working in agile scrum or Kanban, additional experience with Azure DevOps for backlog and code management preferred.
  • Experience with Cloud tooling, Azure Machine Learning, Blob, Data Factory or equivalent AWS tools.
  • Hands-on experience with data science tools, Posit (RStudio) Suite of tools, SourceTree, Git/Github, Azure DevOps
  • Basic working knowledge of Unix/Linux
  • Familiarity with Revenue Cycle Management
  • Familiarity with finance revenue forecasting a plus
  • Problem-solving aptitude
  • Analytical mind and excellent business sense

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional lifting/carrying (10 pounds or less)

  • Prolonged computer/PC work
