The Department of Public Health Sciences is committed to excellence in research and teaching, to building a faculty and staff committed to preparing a diverse workforce, and to extending educational opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds. The Department has extensive ties with local and regional health departments, health care systems, and other community partners. In addition to our CEPH-accredited BSPH, MPH and PhD degree programs; we offer a BS in Health Systems Management, and a CAHME-accredited MHA program; and we collaborate with the School of Data Science in the delivery of an MS in Health Informatics and Analytics. The Department consists of 30 full-time faculty serving over 1,500 undergraduate and 200 graduate students. The Department is a member of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA). The Department is housed in the College of Health and Human Services, which also includes the Department of Applied Physiology, Health and Clinical Science; the School of Nursing; and the School of Social Work.

Description of Work

Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant/Associate Professor will engage in scholarship that advances the Department’s portfolio of public health and health services research; teach in our undergraduate, masters and doctoral program(s) including a proposed PhD in Epidemiology; and contribute professional service to the institution, community, and discipline.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.



Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
Eligible candidates must have a doctoral degree in epidemiology by August 2023. Applicants must be eligible for appointment at the rank of either Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor with tenure, in the Department of Public Health Sciences. Assistant Professor candidates are expected to present evidence of promise for contributing to the Department’s research portfolio, obtaining external research funding, and teaching. Candidates for rank of Associate must demonstrate evidence of publication productivity and ability to obtain external funding, teaching excellence at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, student mentoring, and service leadership.

The Assistant (tenure track) or Associate (tenured) Professor of Epidemiology will: a) engage in scholarship that advances the Department’s portfolio of public health and health services research and seek extramural research funding; b) teach in our undergraduate, masters and doctoral program(s) including a proposed PhD in Epidemiology; c) contribute professional service to the institution, community, and discipline; and (d) support the Department’s mission and vision. The Department of Public Health Sciences includes 30 full-time faculty serving over 1500 undergraduate and 200 graduate students. Candidates from all areas of Epidemiology will be considered. Applicants with research experience in cancer and other chronic diseases, maternal and child health, health disparities, sexually transmitted diseases, and advanced epidemiologic methods are particularly encouraged to apply.
