General Information
James Madison University invites applications for the Assistant Director of Restorative Practices in the Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices (OSARP). The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for overseeing the restorative practices program in the office; conducting intakes and facilitated processes for sanctioned, referral, and Adaptable Resolution cases; initiating and maintaining relationships with internal and external restorative partners; establishing marketing and outreach for restorative practices and the office with campus and community constituents; conducting minor, major and flexible administrative case reviews; coordinating the practicum experiences of students; supervising a full-time Coordinator; conducting program assessment; meeting with reporting parties for regular, sexual misconduct, and Title IX cases; and interacting with parents, faculty, police and legal counsel.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Restorative Practices reports to the Associate Director, Case Management in the Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices and has responsibility for the following:

Oversee the Restorative Practices unit, case load, and programs. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Serving as the Restorative Practices case manager
  • Managing, scheduling, tracking, and being the main contact for all sanctioned, referral, and Adaptable Resolution processes and cases
  • Lead communication efforts for internal and external constituents
  • Manage the Restorative Practices email account in partnership with the Coordinator of Restorative Practices
  • Lead weekly Restorative Practices team meetings
  • Partner with the Coordinator for Restorative Practices and Associate Director of Case Management to make big picture approvals regarding the unit
  • Conduct intake and other meetings for sanctioned and referral cases
  • Facilitate Restorative Practices processes
  • Oversee recruitment and training of facilitators and community representatives for Restorative Practices processes
  • Oversee the Conversations about Conflict sanctioned program, including the development and updating of program curriculum and facilitation
  • Coordinate all Restorative Practices assessment, working in collaboration with the Center for Assessment and Research Studies and the Assistant Director for Educational Programs
  • Directly supervise the Coordinator of Restorative Practices
  • Oversee supervision of Restorative Practices Graduate Assistant and any student staff
  • Coordinate training and supervision of any practicum students assigned to the unit


Participate as a Case Administrator for minor, major, and flexible cases including Sexual Misconduct, Title IX Sexual Harassment, and suspension level cases, as appropriate. Participate as an advisor/guide for Responding and Reporting Parties, including in Sexual Misconduct and Title IX Sexual Harassment cases.

Coordinate marketing and outreach to the campus and local community for the Restorative Practices unit. Manage the scheduling, creation, facilitation, and tracking of Restorative Practices outreach. Assess the effectiveness of Restorative Practices outreach. Coordinate updates to the website for Restorative Practices. Collaborate with the Assistant Director for Educational Programs on general marketing and outreach for the Office of Student Accountability & Restorative Practices, as needed.

Serve as a key staff member to answer questions and interact with parents/guardians, faculty, university counsel and federal agents. Foster positive working relationships with JMU Police, Residence Life, Title IX, Victim Advocacy, Athletics, Fraternity & Sorority Life, and others associated with student discipline on our campus as applicable to the position. Consistently review language and practices of the Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices through a restorative lens. Serve on departmental, divisional and university-wide committees as applicable to the position.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Case Management or Director of the Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise student staff/employees


Preferred:
  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs or similar field
  • Full-time employee supervision
  • Restorative justice/practices experience, especially in a student conduct setting
  • Conducting case reviews and implementing assessment strategies
  • Collaboration on a team and managing program(s)
  • Reviewing cases at multiple levels
  • Advising sexual misconduct and Title IX cases
  • Solid understanding of a university conduct process, procedures and higher education law, including Title IX

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
