Job Description Summary
The Associate Medical Director, Primary Care is a full-time position in the medical clinic within Student Health and Counseling, part of Wellness at the University of Pennsylvania. The Associate Medical Director, Primary Care is responsible for the supervision of all clinical providers (MD, DO, NP, PAs) within the Primary Care Section, the clinical and administrative management of the section, while also providing clinical care to students.
Job Description
Administrative tasks include establishing the call schedule and other related tasks, managing and evaluating staff performance, serving as a clinical consultant for the medical team, participating in relevant Student Health and Counseling and University quality improvement committees and working groups, and being a member of the management team within Student Health and Counseling’s medical team. The Associate Medical Director, Primary Care works closely with the Assistant Medical Directors of gynecological services and sports medicine in the management of the clinical schedule.
The Associate Medical Director, Primary Care represents the Medical Director when they are not available, and assists with recruiting and onboarding health care providers,. This position reports directly to the Medical Director and ensures that patients receive the highest standard of medical care.
The Associate Medical Director, Primary Care also functions as a staff physician: fifty (50) percent of this positions is clinical and consists of direct patient care. These efforts include providing direct primary patient care including during evening hours and weekends, urgent care, telemedicine, and health education to the student population at the University of Pennsylvania. Candidates must work collaboratively, cooperatively, and efficiently with nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, and other clinical staff.
Expertise in adolescent health, gynecological and reproductive health, mental health, and behavioral health are strongly preferred, as are experience in the care of LGBTQ patients and/or patients with eating concerns.
Candidates must be available to work a weekly in-office schedule including evenings and Saturdays as well as participate in a back-up on-call schedule for nurse triage service.
Job Responsibilities

Participate in senior management responsibilities within the Student Health and Counseling medical team, including acting in the capacity of chair of internal committees, assisting the Medical Director and Executive Director with establishing strategic plan, evaluating, establishing, and implementing processes to improve operations. Represent the Medical Director in their absence.
- Supervise and manage clinical providers within Primary Care - full time MD/DO; NP; PAs and temporary staff. Responsible for training and orienting new clinicians, coordinating and establishing schedules and performance management through evaluating and establishing appropriate clinical and performance expectations. Annual evaluations of primary care providers.
- Provide direct medical care to students; this also includes but is not limited to completing medical records, patient correspondence and coordinating care with specialists and other outside providers as necessary.
- Provide direct medical care to students during evening and weekend shifts and serve as a back-up on call and for nurse triage service. Meet with hospitalized students at UPHS facilities as necessary.
Qualifications

M.D. or D.O. required. Board certification in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics with experience in clinical primary care for adolescents and young adults.

2+ years experience in a management or supervisory role required.

7+ years clinical experience preferred.

Experience must include supervisory responsibility, knowledge of academic issues, programs and institutions, and the development of policies and procedures.

Must have affinity for a university student population, recognize and support the mission of student-centered care along their academic journey.

Must possess a high degree of analytical initiative and ability. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.

Must be highly organized and analytical and able to deal effectively with various data sources.

Must be able to work cooperatively with a variety of individuals, exhibit appropriate sensitivity to others, and interface effectively with students, University staff and physicians, and University administrators and students.

Must possess excellent technical and professional management skills, including conflict resolution.

Previous supervisory experience in a student health primary care setting preferred.

Current license to practice in Pennsylvania, DEA certification.

Must be eligible for appointment in Department of Medicine or Family Practice at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Familiarization with electronic health record system required, Point and Click and Epic preferred. Criminal background check required.

Targeted Pay Range

$175,000 - $240,000. Salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
