At-Risk, Family Service Coordinator

Job Summary:
The successful local at-risk, family service coordinator will understand the challenges faced by impoverished and homeless children, youth, and families, including unaccompanied youth and preschool aged children. The coordinator must also understand the rights and services provided to children and youth experiencing homelessness through the McKinney-Vento Act and other Federal and State laws and programs. The successful candidate must have a clear understanding of the job requirements of the position as outlined below, and the state and school district systems in which these requirements will be enacted, including the budgeting system and state student data collection system(s). The at-risk, family service coordinator should also be aware of state and school district policies that impact children and youth experiencing homelessness and characteristics of being “at-risk” for dropping out of school. In addition, an effective coordinator is familiar with current community resources that may provide assistance to students and families in need.

Qualifications
:
Bachelor’s Degree Required, Master’s degree preferred, in human services/social work or LISW (Licensed independent social worker)

Essential Duties
:
The At-risk coordinator will ensure:
  • children and youth experiencing at-risk tendencies and/or homelessness are identified by school personnel through outreach, communication and coordination of activities with other local entities and agencies
  • children and youth experiencing homelessness are enrolled in, and have a full and equal opportunity to succeed in, schools within the district
  • children, youth, and families experiencing hardships have access to and receive educational services for which they are eligible - including early childhood programming, early intervention services under the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and other preschool programs administered by the school district
  • children, youth, and families experiencing hardship and/or are in need of services receive referrals to health care, dental, mental health, substance abuse, housing, and other appropriate services
  • the parents or guardians of students experiencing hardship and/or are in need are informed of the educational and related opportunities available to their children, and are provided with meaningful opportunities to participate in the education of their children
  • public notice of the educational rights of students experiencing hardship is disseminated in locations frequented by families and youth experiencing hardships, including schools, shelters, public libraries, and soup kitchens, in a manner and form understandable to parents, guardians, and unaccompanied youth
  • enrollment and attendance disputes are mediated in accordance with the provisions of the law
  • advocacy for at-risk youth, families and take preventative measures to ensure we are maximizing our drop-out prevention services and programs

  • MAJOR FUNCTIONS:
  • Assessment of Student, Family & School Needs
    Effectively and appropriately assesses and addresses the needs, characteristics, and interactions of students, families, and community.
  • Research, develop and coordinate administration of school-wide and targeted mental health and social/emotional screening tools and assessments.
  • Use student, family, and school assessment results to identify needs that affect student learning.

  • Direct Services/Service Delivery

  • Develop, review, and evaluate orientation and school transition activities and procedures for students and families
  • Serve as the Homeless Liaison for assigned school(s) ensuring students and families experiencing housing insecurity have access to school and community resources
  • Serve as the Community Agencies Facilitator for assigned school(s)
  • Develop, lead, and/or refer students to group interventions for a range of social, emotional, behavioral, at-risk, mental health and basic needs issues
  • Provide individual support to students for a range of social, emotional, behavioral, mental health, and basic needs issues to maximize our drop-out prevention services
  • Participate in MTSS building implementation to maximize drop-out prevention
  • Develop and participate in efforts that promote student and family voice and choice in their educational pathways
  • Advocate for the needs of under-represented student populations

  • Consultation and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with and provide guidance to all school resource positions and Student Assistance Teams on issues of attendance, diversity, mental health, crisis intervention, drop-out preventsion, child abuse and neglect, and bullying and harassment
  • Take an active role with building intervention and planning teams
  • Take an active role in community/school partnership teams, task forces, panels, and projects
  • Evaluate and help coordinate student extracurricular and community involvement opportunities that foster student leadership and service and promote school and community engagement

  • Program Planning, Implementation & Evaluation

  • Use assessment, evaluation, and universal screening results from multiple sources to develop and recommend appropriate interventions for individuals, families, schools, and communities
  • Participate in planning and implementation of school and/or system-wide programs to promote a safe, healthy, caring school climate that fosters academic success.
  • Take an active role in projects and initiatives aimed at alleviating bias, discrimination, and injustice in school systems and communities
  • Assists the school and community in planning programs that alleviate situations that may interfere with the learning process of students.

Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of students, staff, and families.
Ability to develop strong relationships with students and families to encourage involvement in school activities.

Salary will be highly competitive dependent on experience along with comprehensive benefit package including health, dental, life, LTD, and vision
