West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust is looking to appoint a Band 3 MLA to join the dynamic and evolving team within the Microbiology Department at Watford General Hospital.

The Microbiology department is accredited to UKAS ISO 15189:2012.We serve a population of approximately half a million and the laboratory processes over 450,000 tests per year providing a comprehensive diagnostic service including Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Infectious Disease Serology and Molecular testing.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, and hard-working team player with a keen eye for detail to join our very busy Microbiology team. Your duties shall involve work in Bacteriology, Serology, Molecular, and Mycology laboratories. You will work closely with other staff in the receipt, checking, recording and preparation of samples using computer laboratory systems and lab equipment, such as centrifuges, incubators etc. Participate in the laboratory QMS (quality management system), processing of patient samples, loading and unloading patient samples from analysers.

All duties and tasks should be in accordance with SOPs and if difficulties encountered there should be referred to the Associate Practitioner, Biomedical Scientist or Senior BMS as appropriate.

Applicants should have a good basic standard of education to match NVQ Level 2, GCSE or equivalent in Maths, English, and Science subjects plus good keyboard and communication skills. Experience is preferable but not essential as full training shall be provided.

The successful candidate will be required to work 1 in 4 Saturdays. Please note the dept. is currently going through a management of change (MoC) process. As a result candidates should be prepared to work shifts and/or to work from a different site in the future. Full details shall be provided at interview stage.

To learn and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of routine work within the laboratory and maintain competency levels through assessment protocols.

To ensure that work is carried out efficiently/accurately in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and to bring any problems to the attention of a BMS that may arise during the course of their duty.

Work closely with other Pathology staff in the receipt, checking, recording and preparation of samples using simple laboratory equipment, e.g. centrifuges.

Separation of serum from blood samples and accurately distributing into appropriate containers for testing and storing.

Load Blood Culture bottles onto the blood culture analyser and remove negative samples.

Perform daily quality control checks on simple laboratory equipment such as incubators, refrigerators and water baths.

Preparation of reagents and laboratory media for analytical use.

Under strict supervision of a HCPC registered BMS, undertake simple analytical tasks following established procedures and protocols regarding the nature, sequence and timing of activities to correctly complete required tasks.

Undertake the safe disposal of laboratory waste, segregating glass, plastic and sharps.

Operation of the laboratory autoclave in order to sterilise laboratory waste, maintenance of this area to keep it clean and free of contaminated and sterilised waste.

Deal with unlabelled and mislabelled specimens according to laboratory protocol.
