Benefit Alternative Perfusionist
We are seeking an experienced Perfusionist to join our accomplished cardiovascular team!
This professional uses his/her clinical expertise, specialized knowledge of extracorporeal technology, and medical therapy to maintain life support of critically ill patients. In consultation with the cardiovascular surgeon or other physician, the perfusionist uses independent activity and decision making to ensure safe and effective patient management while on extracorporeal circulation or cardiac assist.

We are seeking an experienced Perfusionist to join our accomplished cardiovascular team!
This professional uses his/her clinical expertise, specialized knowledge of extracorporeal technology, and medical therapy to maintain life support of critically ill patients. In consultation with the cardiovascular surgeon or other physician, the perfusionist uses independent activity and decision making to ensure safe and effective patient management while on extracorporeal circulation or cardiac assist.
The Cardiovascular Surgery department performs over 350 cases/year. Hours can vary from 6am-6pm Monday-Friday with 1/3 on call requirement. Experience required.
Requirements include:

Bachelors degree in biological or health sciences preferred.

Bachelors degree in biological or health sciences preferred
- Reviews patient medical record for pertinent information preoperatively.
- Integrates the information presented in the medical record with technical knowledge of extracorporeal circulation to select specialized equipment and techniques and develop a plan of perfusion patient management.
- Uses clinical expertise and technical knowledge of extracorporeal circulation to minimize the recognized pathophysiology of cardiopulmonary bypass.
- Consults with the cardiovascular surgeon or other physician in the selection of appropriate equipment and techniques to be used in extracorporeal circulation.
- Prioritizes appropriately among the multiple tasks necessary for patient management on extracorporeal circulation.
- Communicates clearly and in a timely manner with other members of the health care team to coordinate patient care.
- Participates in a documented program of quality improvement for each cardiovascular perfusion or cardiac assist case.
- Operates cardio respiratory support equipment in a safe and appropriate manner according to accepted national and hospital standards.
- Carefully monitors necessary physiological variables during cardiopulmonary bypass or cardiac assist.
- Administers by verbal order, prescription, or by standard protocol a variety of blood products, anesthetic agents and medications.
- Responsible for the induction of hypothermia and administration of cardioplegia.
- Interprets blood gas analysis during extracorporeal circulation.
- Withdraws and performs any lab testing procedure appropriate to the scope of perfusion practice including those essential to determining clinical status changes relative to life support systems maintained by extracorporeal circulation.
- Operates a variety of ancillary equipment such as blood cell washers, ventricular assist devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, physiologic monitors and recorders, pacemakers or hypothermia equipment relevant to perfusion technology.
