Description

Are you passionate about the biomechanics, and how to apply science and engineering to protect the warfighter?

Are you looking for a broad, hands-on research opportunity to apply your computational modeling skills to better predict human response?

Are you intrigued by problems at the intersection of biological systems, mechanics, technology, and data science?

If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our Human Performance and Biomechanics team at APL!

We are seeking a Biomechanical Computational Analyst to help us develop advanced human computational models to characterize and predict human injury to range of inputs including battle-field related exposures. Candidates will join a team performing leading research in biomechanics projects including human model development, armor system prediction and evaluation, high-rate experimentation, and data collection and analysis from novel sensor systems for the purpose of increasing understanding of injury mechanisms and developing improved mitigation systems.

As a Biomechanical Computational Analyst, you will...

  • Assist in the hierarchical development of computational models to study the human biomechanical response to high-rate, dynamic loading (blast, bunt, ballistic, fatigue, etc.). Specific tasks include developing end-to-end computational models, deploying and developing constitutive models for novel materials, and executing simulations and interpreting results from paired computational-physical validation experiments.

  • Develop novel techniques for processing and analyzing sensor data resulting from experimental tests and computational models. Work to transform large data sets into actionable information by extracting and analyzing signal feature information, comparing sensor response to test outcome, and drawing in meta-data through co-variate analysis.

  • Test and evaluate novel and existing human surrogate systems in order to understand the response of the human body to a range of dynamic loading conditions. Includes on-site testing in our state-of-the-art Biomechanics Test Facility and off-site live-fire testing, hands-on experimentation, results analysis, and publication of results.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Hold a PhD in Biomechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related field with a focus on human Biomechanics.

  • Have 3+ years work experience in developing and deploying computational finite element methods (FEA/CFD, SPH, multi-body physics, etc.)

  • Have an aptitude with data analysis software such as MATLAB or Python.

  • Are self-motivated and interested in working in cutting-edge biomechanics research in a dynamic environment.

  • Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You 'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have hands-on experience developing end-to-end computational models (meshing, material characterization, verification and validation, communication of results, etc.)

  • Have experience with LS-DYNA and associated processing software (OASYS, BETA CAE, etc.)

  • Have experience using advanced regression data techniques and machine learning/artificial intelligence to solve complex data problems.
