The full-time Building Inspector performs work conducting building inspections and plan reviews, ensuring compliance with codes and regulations relating to building, fire, general maintenance of private property, illegal use of facilities, rental, septic, and zoning, preparing permits, completing and maintaining required reports and records, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Work is performed under the direction of the Chief Building Official.

Essential Duties

  • Travels to and performs on-site inspections on buildings and construction sites; conducts plan reviews; interprets and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal rules, regulations, codes, and ordinances.
  • Completes paperwork and reports on completed inspections; prepares permits, handouts, forms, and related paperwork; delivers required reports to the appropriate resource; delivers notifications of non-compliance and citations.
  • Assists architects, builders, contractors, developers, homeowners, engineers, and general public with codes and inspection related inquiries; answers questions and assists with code compliance requirements; directs inquiries to the appropriate resource as needed.
  • Enforces zoning and subdivision ordinances; assists the Building Official as directed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry Building Official Limited certification upon hire.
  • Valid driver's license in the State of MN.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate of a two-year vocational school or equivalent credits. Law enforcement, public administration, housing, construction trades, planning or related course work preferred.

  • Strong mechanical/plumbing background preferred.

  • Commercial and industrial construction experience.

  • Commercial or residential plan review experience.

  • Advanced certification or training in area related to fire suppression, fire protection, fire inspector, etc.

  • Certified Building Official.

  • Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Subsurface Sewage Treatment Systems (SSTS) certification.

  • Fire Inspector I certification.


Working Conditions
Physical Requirements and Activity
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions.


Sensory Requirements

Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.


Sensory Utilization

Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.


Environmental Conditions

Work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
