Cable Splicer
Summary
Connects, rearranges, repairs and maintains outside cable; climbs poles, works aloft on platforms as well as under ground in manholes, cable vaults and ditches. Performs other duties as may be assigned.
General Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
A. Wears appropriate safety apparel and is aware of and follows all established safety practices and procedures.
B. Loads necessary tools, material and equipment on Company vehicles and drives or rides to work locations.
C. Connects and rearranges cable facilities associated with aerial, buried,
underground and in buildings according to engineering design by utilizing
hand tools and specialized equipment.
D. Utilizes special test equipment to test for and locate cable trouble and
perform cable completion tests.
E. Works with open flame and hot liquids such as molten lead to make airtight closures on cable sleeves.
F. Reads and interprets work prints and diagrams and is familiar with current practices pertinent to each job assignment.
G. Climbs poles; works aloft on platforms or in vehicle-mounted buckets; enters tunnels, buildings, trenches, splice pits, cable vaults and manholes.
H. Uses test equipment to check for gas in manholes and empties water and debris from manholes.
I. Operates power equipment such as pumps, compressors, blowers, backhoes and trenchers.
J. Monitors and ensures proper cable pressurization is maintained.
K. Inspects vehicles for safe operating conditions, and ensures proper servicing is done on such vehicles.
L. Maintains accuracy in all reporting functions.
M. Works long hours during cutovers, emergency conditions or in inclement weather. Work may be performed aloft in winter or at night; also in dirty, damp manholes often in awkward positions. Work involves considerable eye concentration. Repair work is done under the pressure of time.
N. Heavy lifting may be required in handling tools, materials and supplies.
O. May be required to work day, evening or night tours, overtime, emergency call-outs, weekends and out-of-town assignments as required.
P. Plans and supervises work of cable splicer helper.
Q. Classroom training may be away from home location.
R. May be required to perform additional duties and tasks as required by the Company.
Basic Qualifications
A. Tests – Results obtained in standard tests for this position must meet minimum requirements established by the Company, in accordance with Company policy.
B. Must be able to read, write and perform the following mathematical calculations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
C. Previous experience as a Cable Splicer Helper or other related experience would be helpful.
D. Must have ability to distinguish true colors.
E. Normal hearing; must be able to distinguish tones.
F. Requires climbing poles/ladders up to 60 feet.
G. Requires frequent lifting up to 75 pounds; occasional lifting up to 150 pounds.
H. Frequent reaching or moving of heavy objects by shoving or pulling with arms and hands.
I. May require frequent stooping and crawling in restricted area, including vaults.
J. Requires prolonged standing and off-balanced positioning while working aloft.
K. May work outdoors in all weather conditions.
L. Valid state driver's license.
M. Ability to drive vehicle with manual gear shift.
Training
Classroom and on-the-job training.
