In 1887, John Ames Mitchell, editor of Life magazine, raised $800 to send 266 children from New York City to the Life Fresh Air Farm in Branchville, Connecticut. Since that first summer, thousands of children and teens have participated in our nature-based summer camp and after-school programs in New York and New Jersey.

Our DIRECTORS bring with them diverse skills and experiences that result in a well-rounded team. We are hiring for the leadership positions listed below.

The WELLNESS DIRECTOR collaborates with other camp leaders in responding to emotional wellness needs. They will act as a primary support to all staff, and work to provide the necessary tools and resources for staff success.

The TRAINING DIRECTOR develops and implements pre-season and mid-season training for all day camp programs. They are responsible for the onboarding of all mid-season hires. They are a primary support to staff in their skill building, working to provide the necessary tools and resources for staff success.

The PROGRAM DIRECTOR oversees all day camp program operations, working closely with the Camp Director to ensure program activities are within the Trail Blazers philosophy. This person supervises a team of progarm specialists, provides direction and coaching to staff, and takes the lead on special events and trips.

SITE DIRECTORS take on full management of a day camp site. The sites they oversee vary in size, ranging from 4 to 10 small groups of campers with staff teams of 8 to 16 people. Site Directors provide ongoing coaching and support to staff, oversee program implementation, cultivate positive relationships with campers and families, and have full management responsible for their site.

Position-specific requirements can be found in the job descriptions. Job specifications for all directing roles include:

  • experience as a leader of youth development programming; summer camp experience preferred
  • High-level knowledge of child development
  • Experience giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • High levels of enthusiasm, kindness, and patience
  • High level verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to on-going changes
  • A desire to work outside in all weather
  • Ability to move safely over uneven terrain
  • Ability to be on your feet for most of the day
  • Ability to walk continuously for 45 minutes
  • Ability to run, bend, and change directions while moving
  • Ability to see and respond to dangerous situations

Employment Details

Most positions are Brooklyn based, with the exeption of one Site Director role

Prospect Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park
Dates: June 17 - September 1
Total summer pay: $9000
$8800 base salary, plus $200 bonus upon completion of contract

Morningside Park
Dates: June 17 - August 4
Total summer pay: $5725
$5600 base salary, plus $125 bonus upon completion of contract
