GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB


An employee in this class performs lead worker duties and journey level carpentry work in the areas of construction, repair, maintenance, remodeling and finished carpentry that may include cabinetry, shelving and furniture. The employee works independently and often directs carpenters and subordinate crews during projects. The employee is given broad objectives for completion of tasks, and procures needed supplies and labor to complete assignments. The employee is expected to observe the work of subordinate employees, provide coaching and guidance, and report recurring problems with personnel to appropriate supervisor. Duties may also include work in other trades areas such as minor electrical and or building trade fields. Work assignments are received through supervisory personnel and established work order processes, and completion of work is performed independently and with the expectation that a broad knowledge of the carpentry trade field is applied. Employees are subject to working in inside and outside environments, extreme temperatures, and hazards in the work including exposures to loud noises, vibrations, proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working in high places, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Duties may expose employees to human body fluids and thus they are subject to the OSHA requirements on bloodborne pathogens. Workers are also subject to work in close quarters such as crawl spaces and small rooms. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed for lasting quality, effectiveness, appearance, and functionality through conference, inspection, and a review of records.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


  • Works as a skilled carpenter performing highly skilled carpentry work in the areas of construction, repair, maintenance, remodeling and finished carpentry that may include cabinetry, shelving and furniture.
  • Evaluates work orders and plans for appropriate supplies and staff for completion of projects.
  • Provides instruction and coaching to subordinate staff. Observes the work of staff and trains accordingly.
  • Orders and checks that appropriate materials are available. Requisitions materials as needed.
  • Performs general carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, remodeling, and repair of school property and facilities; floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens, furniture and cabinetry and in particular additions, remodeling and new construction.
  • Selects, cuts, and trims materials to size, assembles assignments according to plans, sketches, and specifications. Sets up adjusts and operates power equipment in task completion. Builds scaffolds and concrete forms in regard to roof work, etc. Sands, paints, stains, in finish work completion. Builds and hangs doors and repairs table, chairs, and desks.
  • Performs manual labor tasks including material handling, maintaining shop area, stocking and organizing supplies and tools.
  • Evaluates job requests, prioritizes requests, determines materials and labor requirements, completes assignments and installs in required.
  • Performs work in other trades areas such as minor electrical and or building trade
  • Develops and maintains a working knowledge of existing and proposed school buildings and facilities.
  • May provide lead worker functions for crew; organizing workflow, equipment and diagnosing difficult situations.
  • Performs preventive maintenance monitoring and preventive repairs.
  • Performs related duties as required.
