Good Tern Co-op is a small food cooperative in Rockland, ME. We are member/community owned, customer-centric, inclusive and our goal is to provide a high-quality, fairly priced, source of food and health products; to educate and inform members and the community on whole food, health and nutrition, food sources, and food preparation; and to help further cooperative principles, democracy, and self-reliance.

We are currently hiring for a cashier/customer service role. We have shifts availble for daytime or evening hours. At least one day of weekend availability is required for consideration.
Position Summary: The Cashier provides customer service by checking out customers and their purchases, assisting customers who have questions, signing up and renewing Co-op memberships, and stocking front end groceries and other items.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepares for store opening and ensures registers are ready for sales, when assigned.
- Greets customers and provides exceptional customer service; use POS system to check customers out with their purchases and collect payment; answers customer questions.
- Bags groceries for customers.
- Promotes Co-op membership; explains benefits to customers, signs up new members and renews existing members.
- Processes returns and refunds; assist in resolving other customer issues.
- Notes any transaction anomalies on the day sheet.
- Maintains the Front End, ensuring neat and clean registers and well stocked supplies.
- Ensures that the Café is kept clean, tidy and well stocked; duties may include sweeping, mopping floors, wiping down surfaces, etc.
- Ensures that bathrooms are cleaned and well stocked; duties may include sweeping, mopping floors, cleaning toilets, etc.
- Prepares store for closing, when assigned; ensures that tills are counted and secure, cleaning tasks are completed, trash is taken out, that the building is secure, and that safety checks are completed.
Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- May maintain and count registers, ensuring that safe drops are made regularly and adequate change is maintained.
- Assists other departments with stocking, cleaning, opening and closing as time allows.
- Answer phones, transfer calls and take messages.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak or listen, stand (most of the time), walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and twist. Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds. Hand and finger dexterity, motor control and eye/hand coordination is needed. Vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work is performed primarily in a busy retail store environment. Noise level is moderate to loud. Must be able to withstand the stress and pressure of dealing with the public.
