Job description
This VISTA position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with VISTA Leaders and other VISTAs serving throughout the country, all focused on alleviating poverty. The VISTA would be tasked with developing a Sustainable Volunteer Program that includes setting up the structure of the program, systems for recruitment, training/mentoring and retention of volunteers. Specifically, we envision two tracks of volunteer programs. The first track will train and utilize community volunteers to assist clients in filling out their own immigration applications in group settings through workshops. Catholic Charities of East Bay will administer monthly DACA and naturalization eligibility presentations where staff will be present to assess eligibility and volunteers will help attendees complete their applications under the guidance of staff. We also want to develop a similar "workshop" type event for asylum seekers to be done on an "as needed" basis. Utilizing volunteers in this way will allow CCEB to serve greater numbers of people and meet our grant obligations. The second track will be providing a venue, mentorship and support for non-immigration lawyers who want to fulfill their pro bono service obligations. CCEB would like the VISTA to create the structure of the mentorship program and build protocols to screen and track volunteers and cases, outline mentorship roles and create a resource library to support volunteer attorneys. These volunteer attorneys can assist community members in more complex cases & removal defense and provide free robust legal representation, under CCEB guidance, that is otherwise cost prohibitive to most of our clients, filling a great need in the community. Throughout the year the VISTA can refine/supplement the program structure based on staff/volunteer experience.
Member Duties : Examine the existing volunteer recruitment framework and research current models used by partner agencies. Fine tune job descriptions and re-establish partnerships with colleges, universities, pro bono coordinators at Bay Area Law firms and other community partners to set up ongoing recruitment. Along with ILS Leadership, develop a training curriculum and mentor volunteers to run monthly DACA and naturalization workshops. Create the structure of the volunteer program and build protocols to screen and track attorney volunteers onboarding and case assignments. Outline mentorship roles and training curriculum for pro bono volunteers. Create a resource library, with manual, onboarding materials, logistic workflows, samples, etc. Throughout the year the VISTA can refine/supplement the program structure based on staff/volunteer experience. Provide training to CCEB staff on how to administer the program to assure that it will remain functional and sustainable after the VISTA’s departure.
