Job description
We are currently seeking Cell Engineers with practical experience in battery electrode slurry mixing, electrode coating, calendaring, slitting, cell (coin, pouch) assembly, and performance evaluations as well as new battery materials, chemistry, technology developments, etc. The successful candidates might also be actively involved in Nxu mass production cell & pack product development and release. The ideal candidate should exhibit a can-do attitude and demonstrate excellence in their respective fields and possess the ability to learn quickly and strive for perfection within a fast-paced startup environment.
ABOUT Nxu
At Nxu, Inc., our vision is a big one: We are building a future where energy is harnessed in a way that is abundant, accessible, and infinite to make electric mobility viable. The path towards this future starts with energy and infrastructure today, mobility tomorrow, and from there, the possibilities are endless. Our goal is to keep the world moving, with a focus on simplicity, performance, and novel outcomes. We are excited to take on impossible challenges and the obstacles that come with them. If the impact is significant and we can build the technology to solve it, we will. We are builders, inventors, and creators. We stay positive, roll up our sleeves, and think outside the box – and we're looking for optimistic problem-solvers to join us in building this future.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Should be actively involved in cell electrode manufacturing processes including (i) Mixing electrode slurries from raw materials, (ii) Operation of the doctor blade or pilot line-level coating process, (iii) operation of the electrode slitting process, (iv) operation of calendaring and packaging processes to prepare the electrode with proposed loading, thickness, and density.
- The candidate will be involved in coin half/full cell, single-layer (or multilayer) pouch cell or other cell form factors assembly, and performance evaluations.
- The candidate will also be involved in different new battery materials, chemistry, and technology investigations and development. Including graphite anode//Ni-rich NMC or NCA cells, Si (or SiO) anode-based battery systems, LFP chemistry, liquid Li metal batteries, all-solid-state batteries, etc.
- The candidate may also be responsible for chemical cell design and material evaluation (anode, cathode, electrolyte, and separator) to meet cell product requirements.
- The candidate will be responsible for overseeing the scale-up from lab to pilot production and finally to mass production level for the electrode and cell manufacturing process.
- Operate a variety of laboratory equipment used for battery cell performance evaluation and characterization. Such as cell testing including EIS, CV, GITT, batteries cycling performance testing with Neware, ARBIN, or MACOR cyclers, Biologic tester, etc.
- Perform comprehensive technical support to the company-university joint cell R&D laboratory.
- Be able to handle raw materials such as chemicals and battery electrodes.
- Clean, maintain, and prepare equipment for manufacturing and experimental processes.
IDEALLY, YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH:
- 2+ years of work experience with Li-ion battery anode and cathode slurry mixing, coating, cell assembly, testing, or manufacturing.
- Industrial experience in the operation of the Glovebox and operating electrochemical testers for general cell performance evaluation or characterization.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and must be able to design and conduct complex experiments, employing the DOE approach to interpret and correlate experimental results with battery product performance.
