Primary Purpose
Serves as an expert resource, with regard to compliance activities related to industrial hygiene monitoring activities, to ensure a safe environment for Parkland patients, staff members, volunteers, and visitors.
Minimum Specifications
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, physics, or engineering.
Experience:
- Three years experience in practicing Industrial Hygiene in a Healthcare setting or five years experience in the General Practice of Industrial Hygiene
Equivalent Education and/or Experience:
- May have an equivalent combination of education and experience to substitute for both the education and the experience requirements.
Certification/Registration/Licensure:
- Board Certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene or the Board for Global EHS Credentialing

Skills or Special Abilities:
- Must have expert knowledge of safety related codes.
- Must have expert knowledge of regulatory agency standards.
- Must have expert knowledge of sampling methodologies related to environmental monitoring
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software.
- Must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing.
- Must be proficient with word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Must be able to work independently with diverse groups.
- Must be able to demonstrate project management skills.
- Must be able to demonstrate effective leadership skills.
- Must be able to perform special assignments and duties as requested.
Responsibilities:
1. Evaluate, assess, and recommend control options for the significant and potential hazards associated with the management of an approved 800 bed facility.
2. Conduct defendable industrial hygiene field measurements to verify levels of exposure to the various chemicals and medications used in the workplace. This may be accomplished through personal dosimeters, active sampling, area monitoring and surface wipe studies.
3. Provide and interpret results of industrial hygiene field measurements. Including presentation of results and interpretations to monitoring participants, area leadership and through department level reporting.
4. Conduct environmental surveys and observe work conditions to identify processes which pose a risk to the health of employees such as exposure control, bloodborne pathogens, toxicology, ergonomics, lighting levels, and sound level assessments.
5. Analyze and interpret results of field measurements and environmental survey assessments while developing plans for improved work conditions. This includes review of current Standard Operating Procedures for Environmental, Safety, and Health
6. Evaluate improvement plans and develop proactive monitoring schedules to help identify those leading indicators that can be addressed proactively.
7. Update clients on the findings of an industrial assessment
8. Evaluate the Confine space entry pre- and post- entry environmental evaluations to ensure that effective control measures are in place. This is coordinated from a specific project evaluation standpoint and also programmed annual assessments of the confined space inventory.
9. Organize, develop, and deliver training to educate workers on health/safety requirements necessary for a hazard-free environment as well as train the trainer.
10. Carry out investigations to evaluate adequacy of ventilation, lighting, general indoor air quality complaints and other conditions concerning employee safety
11. Participate as a member on the radiation safety committee evaluating protection against ionizing radiation and hazardous energy (laser light, UV, Other).
12. Evaluate walking and work surfaces to include coefficient of friction analysis, where appropriate.
13. Prepare reports and maintain records of observations, contaminant analysis and recommended controls
14. Carry out research to identify corrective actions for indoor air pollution
15. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal and state legislations on occupational safety
16. Attend educational programs and conferences to increase job knowledge and skill
17. Liaise with industrial health engineers and other occupational professionals to design remedial measures for hazardous conditions
18. Ensure organizational policies align with standards set by regulatory health/safety body.
