Job Summary:

The Hospice Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support when needed to the Hospice patient, their family, and to members of the Hospice team. They provide assistance at the time of the patient’s death and support to the family during the bereavement period. The Hospice Chaplain must be able to work independently, make judgments based on assessments and data available, and act accordingly. They must be flexible, innovative, and possess good interpersonal skills. They must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress and demonstrate emotional stability.

The Hospice Chaplain must be available to complete spiritual assessments for new admissions, attend Interdisciplinary Group (IDG) meetings, and available for on call support as needed.

Care through the Hospice department is delivered directly in the homes of the patients we serve, working with both the patients themselves and their support networks. This is the ideal setting for caring and compassionate staff who are motivated by independent work in a variety of settings and levels of care.

What You Will Do:

  • Provides direct spiritual support and counseling to patients and families in keeping with the patients’ and families’ beliefs.
  • Maintains proper records of visits to patients and families, and submits all documentation within 48 hours of visit.
  • Assists the Home Care Social Worker with maintaining the bereavement program for patient families, and provides bereavement follow-up services, as assigned.
  • Participates in Interdisciplinary Group (IDG) conferences by assessing the potential spiritual needs of patients and families and reporting on services, as indicated.
  • Contacts clergy or appropriate spiritual representative of patients and families as indicated.
  • Works with staff, clergy, and community groups to enhance their sensitivity to the spiritual concerns of patients and families experiencing terminal illness and loss.
  • Provides educational programs for community clergy, religious, and lay representatives as resources allow.
  • Participates in on-call availability of spiritual services.

Minimum Qualifications for the Job:

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited seminary or school of theology, or appropriate certification in hospital or pastoral ministry.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a chaplain or spiritual counselor preferred.
  • Certification: Valid driver’s license, current auto liability insurance and reliable transportation is required at time of appointment.

Please note: In lieu of fringe benefits, casual employees receive a $2 an hour casual differential in addition to their hourly base rate of pay. Casual employees will not be scheduled to work a full time schedule for more than four (4) consecutive months or more than 780 hours annually. Casual employees must work a minimum of one (1) shift within a 90 day period to maintain status and employment.


Internal Hires: Pay rate will be determined based on applicable personnel rule or union contract terms.
