OBJECTIVE SUMMARY
: The Charge Nurse (CN) is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift. The CN must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. CN’s must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as regulations, and guidelines that pertain to nursing care. CN’s must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures that are necessary for providing quality care. CN’s must have patience, tact, flexibility, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult situations in a professional manner.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
:

  • Oversees nursing staff on the Med/Surg unit, including Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, CNA’s and Unit Secretaries
  • Coordinates and directs the daily patient care operations of the unit.
  • Analyzes workloads and skill requirements to meet patient care needs.
  • Assesses staff competencies and makes patient care assignments.
  • Delegates appropriate tasks to appropriate personnel, consistent with professional guidelines and departmental standards.
  • Maintains clear communications with the nurse manager regarding unit needs and/or incidents.
  • Basic ability to communicate and comprehend;
  • knowledge of basic nursing skills;
  • knowledge and familiarity with the therapeutic effects and side effects of common medications administered
  • Serves as a resource person on the unit.
  • Able to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Promotes team building with all staff
  • Functions as a role model for current and new staff.
  • Assists physicians and other nursing personnel in the performance of various diagnostic procedures.
  • Assists in the training of new employees
  • Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of infection control practices.
  • Participates in the hospital committee structure.
  • Is knowledgeable of the Quality Control program and the annual QI goals of the Med/Surg unit.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the departments/units ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Utilizes shared management model to facilitate decision-making regarding practice, educational, and quality improvement.
  • Supports the hospital's mission, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to use the computer system.
  • Reports to work on time and is at work as scheduled, as observed by nurse manager.

REQUIRED EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 3 years of medical/surgical clinical experience as a direct care provider or displays the skill and judgment to fill this position

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS: BLS required, ACLS required. Current state registration

Eligibility Requirements - Employees regularly scheduled at least 20 hours per week.

Employee Dependents - Your legal spouse or domestic partner, Dependent children until age 26.
