Job description
The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital under the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is a seeking a Physician Specialist to provide an exceptional patient care experience that promotes healing and recovery in a compassionate public health hospital environment.
The incumbent will be responsible for directing the medical services teams which includes, outpatient Addiction Programming, community and correctional health clinics and medical education programs in ACC. They will be developing policies, guiding outpatient medical treatment along with providing clinical leadership to the Ambulatory Care team. The incumbent will also be responsible for the outpatient addiction program and will be proving direct patient care, consistent with LSH medical services practices and LSH policy. They will also promote the patient care team’s compliance with hospital policies and procedures, and its adoption of patient safety best practices while consulting with other clinicians and participates in medical staff responsibilities.
Please note: This is a day shift position (40 hours per week). Days off are Saturday and Sunday.
Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):
- Directs and leads medical care in Ambulatory Care Center including overseeing Quality metrics, monitors quality of medical documentation in ACC, Ambulatory Care medical coverage, clinical oversight and teaching of Medical Residents, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Medical Students.
- Directs and leads medical care of outpatient Addiction services including integration of Medical Assisted Treatment with Primary Care.
- Advises hospital leadership on issues concerning Ambulatory Care (outpatient care).
- Leads selected hospital wide initiatives through teaching and planning including enhancing the hospital acuity of care.
- Provides coverage for Chief of Medicine Chief of Medical Operations as needed in their absence.
- Accepts eight weeks of assignment per year as inpatient attending on the Acute Medicine teaching service, including the provision of teaching responsibilities. During these rotations, the physician is expected to be on grounds providing supervision to house staff during the hours of 8am-6 pm Monday through Friday.
- Provides four weekends and one holiday of coverage per year as the rounding physician for the Acute Medicine teaching service.
- Supervises medical nurse practitioners and physician assistants on the psychiatric units
- Leads education programs involving medical students and trainees, developing education related policies related to Ambulatory Care.
Required Qualifications
- Teach medical theory and practice to others.
- Supervise resident staff, nurse, and allied health practitioners where applicable.
- Communicate with peers, paraprofessionals, and patients.
- Ability to carry out administrative responsibilities of senior staff.
- Knowledge and credentials satisfactory to be a medical educator.
- Capacity to work collaboratively with other clinical disciplines.
- Knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of general internal medicine as denoted by delineation of clinical privileges to include diagnosis, management, and special procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Board-eligible or board-certified in medical specialties such as geriatrics, oncology, endocrinology, neurology, infectious disease, pulmonary.
- Knowledge of the theory, principles and practice of Medicine and appropriate specialty as denoted by delineation of clinical privileges to include diagnosis, management, and special procedures.

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality cost effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.
Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 260 inpatient beds including 115 Psychiatric beds and 28 Correctional health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.
