Location(s): This position will be stationed at the Headquarters Office in Watsonville, CA. There is a hybrid work schedule available after the first 90 days of employment. Candidates further than 40 miles from Watsonville may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule earlier than the first 90 days of employment.


JOB OVERVIEW:

Digital NEST is a workforce development center that has welcomed hundreds of youth from working-class, farmworker communities to develop the technical and professional skills they need to achieve their dreams. It is an exciting time for the NEST as we are on the precipice of expanding to a total of five communities across Northern California by the end of 2026. Digital NEST has centers in the heart of Watsonville, Salinas, Gilroy, Stockton and Modesto. The first Digital NEST in the Central Valley is expected to launch in Stockton in 2023, with plans to scale across the Bay Area and San Joaquin Valley also underway.


The Chief of Staff (COS) serves as a key member of Digital NEST’s executive leadership team and as an active participant in making strategic decisions for Digital NEST. In partnership with the CEO, Chief Operating Officer (COO), and leadership team, this is the executive position responsible for the design, buildout, and management of the Digital NEST consultancy, ensuring the implementation of the 3-year strategic plan, and expanding the capacity of the leadership team by leading projects that scale the NEST.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Senior Leadership in the Consultancy (50%)

  • Lead the design of organization-level development strategy for Digital NEST consultancy: work with the executive leadership and teams to identify services we can offer, cost of services, identify potential clients, and staffing structure needed to launch consultancy in 2024-2025.
  • Manage the business planning consultant.
  • Establish the department’s goals, objectives, and operating procedures to support the consultancy.
  • Lead the recruitment and onboarding of the consultancy team.
  • Lead and support the Board of Directors Consultancy Committee.
  • Work closely with leads from each department to identify consultancy opportunities.
  • Identify pilot clients and services to offer. Implement a pilot program to learn of opportunities and challenges with the consultancy.
  • Develop a 3-year consultancy strategy.
  • Identify a funding strategy to ensure the sustainability of the consultancy and an additional revenue stream to support the 5 core centers.


Senior Project Management (30%)

  • Oversee large, often cross-functional, organization-wide projects or initiatives; bring together important stakeholders and help drive decisions.
  • Research, perform benchmarking, analyze data, and make recommendations.
  • Propose the creation of new systems and processes to streamline operations, as it relates to the consultancy work and the departments.
  • Own and execute special projects as needed.


Strategic Planning and Alignment (10%)

  • Lead annual strategic planning process for the company by acting as a project manager and ensuring alignment with the CEO and leadership team.
    • Help determine key performance indicators and update dashboards as needed.
  • Lead C-Suite leadership team meetings.
  • In close partnership with the COO, lead the annual Staff Summit.
  • In close partnership with the CEO, support the Board of Directors bi-annual retreats.


Extension of CEO and COO (10%)

  • Maintain a deep understanding of the CEO and COO’s goals, priorities, and implementation plan.
  • Offer input and support in organizational strategic issues; anticipate opportunities and challenges the CEO and COO might miss.
  • Serve as surrogate CEO and COO at key stakeholder meetings.
  • When necessary, provide additional capacity to the CEO and COO, take on complex program design, policy work, special events, and/or strategic communications.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Minimum of a B.A., ideally with an advanced degree.
  • At least 15 years of senior management experience.
  • At least 8 years of non-profit experience.
  • Availability to work and travel occasional nights and weekends.
  • Self-starter with a high degree of initiative, creativity, and proven ability to work independently.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate effectively during times of uncertainty, ambiguity, and rapid change.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Professional demeanor and the ability to use tact and diplomacy when interacting with donors, NEST staff, clients, and other stakeholders.


PREFERRED-BUT-NOT-REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Conversational or fluent in spoken Spanish; fluent in written Spanish.

  • Passion for the mission of Digital NEST and belief in upholding the organization’s core values.
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to issues of culture/ethnicity/race, gender, sexual identity, class/SES, and immigration status.

  • Candidates must have a valid CA driver's license and be able to travel and work evenings or weekends occasionally, or as needed.
