Choir Teacher & Music Director

Position Overview:
The Choir Teacher/Music Director plays an integral role in the Knox Community, as The Knox School’s institutional mission is deeply rooted in the arts. He/she must be a team player, and support the institutional values of The Knox School. Reporting to the Chair of Visual & Performing Arts, the ideal candidate has experience teaching vocal arts, guiding music students, and supporting theatrical directors in musical productions at the middle and/or high school level. The ideal candidate will possess a master’s degree in music, voice, choral studies, or a related field, but candidates with a bachelor’s degree and prior experience will be considered.

This is a full-time position that will begin on August 21, 2023, and run through June 10, 2024. Hours are 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on select schedule rotations, Monday through Friday, and may extend into the evenings, especially during theatre tech weeks and performances.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Teach up to four classes per year including Choir and Middle School Performing Arts. Additional classes may include Music History, Lessons Practicum, Music Fundamentals, Music Theory, AP Music Theory, or related classes based on the candidate’s skills
  • Prepare Knox Choir for performances at Patriot Day, Fall Family Weekend, Commencement, and other campus events
  • Musical Direction for the Middle School Musical (Jr. production), and the Spring Musical, under the direction of Knox’s Theatre Director
  • Organize and support music students with performing arts showcases such as the annual Coffee House and Talent Show, in addition to Fall and Spring Choir Concerts
  • Support students for NYSSMA, Tri-M Honor Society, and other music competitions as required, and assist music students with college application audition materials
  • Support the Senior Class with traditional Senior Singing during the holidays and year-end ceremonies
  • Act as a class and academic advisor to Knox students
  • Supervise one after-school club activity or sport (for qualified candidates)
  • Submit lesson plans and assessments, post grades in a timely manner, and provide communication with the department chair, Dean of Academics, and parents to ensure students are successful in their studies
  • Provide a safe, inclusive, and rigorous learning environment for all students

Qualifications:

  • Prior teaching experience is highly desired (NYS certification is not required)
  • A minimum bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in choral studies, music education, or a related field (Master’s is preferred)
  • The ability to read music, sing and play the piano. Additional instrument skills are a plus
  • Experience with audio technology, mixing, conducting sound checks, and running a soundboard is highly desired
  • Computer literate in Google Suite and other educational software platforms
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • A friendly, outgoing, and positive personality that will inspire students to step outside of their comfort zone and explore the performing arts
