Job Summary
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder is seeking a Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) will serve as an educational and institutional leader in shaping and promoting equity and diversity-based policies, partnerships, research, and strategic initiatives that align with the CIRES vision and mission and scientific goals, and provide leadership and expertise to develop, implement, and achieve the goals of the Institute’s DEI Strategic Plan. The Director of DEI will promote and model a culture of positive engagement and continuous learning, both internally and externally, in efforts to increase knowledge, awareness, competency, and advocacy related to equity and diversity in the sciences.
This position is a member of the CIRES Administrative Team, which is responsible for leading and supporting the essential functions of the Institute. The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) will work in partnership with CIRES Leadership, fellow CIRES administrative units, the University, and our external partners, including the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) to support members of the CIRES community, with special focus on underrepresented groups in the sciences. The DEI Director is responsible for setting priorities, evaluating, measuring, assessing progress, and providing recommendations with regards to the effectiveness and impact of DEI programs, efforts, and interventions aimed to improve our CIRES community. The CIRES DEI Director provides support for employees, students, and teams as a resource and thought partner. In addition, the CIRES Director of DEI may lead or participate in sponsored research projects that further DEI in the environmental sciences.
This position will report to the CIRES Associate Director for Science.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Leadership & Management
- Based on continuous and current research in the field of DEI, provide leadership, coordination, consultation, assistance, strategic oversight, and direction regarding all diversity, equity, and inclusion matters at CIRES.
- Actively engage with CIRES team members as a change agent and thought leader for developing best practices, challenging the status quo, and creating an inclusive culture for the advancement of scientific research.
- Work with CIRES Leadership and supervisors to ensure adherence to inclusive performance management and supervision principles, which will include managing diverse teams and engaging and retaining scientific talent from underrepresented groups.
- Supervise the Director of Global Sustainability Scholars Program. Additional supervisory duties may be assigned as appropriate.
- Develop metrics to ensure accountability, tracking, and monitoring of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts throughout the institute.
- Monitor and assess progress related to CIRES DEI Strategic Plan initiatives. Collaborate closely with staff, administrators, and leaders across the institute to guide and develop related efforts and priorities for furthering the CIRES vision, mission and DEI strategic plan.
- Provide opportunities for CIRES employee and student populations, and other appropriate partners connected to the work of the organization, to gain knowledge, skills, and competencies around diversity, equity and inclusion as applied to the sciences.
- Develop and maintain relationships with CU, NOAA and external organizations and participate in partner diversity activities, which enhance the scientific mission of the organization.
- Strategically partner with CIRES administrative units for cross-collaboration in DEI efforts, which would include:
- Working with CIRES HR on related recruiting, training initiatives or retention activities with focus on underrepresented groups in the sciences.
- Collaborating with CIRES IT and Communications teams to engage and serve diverse audiences (e.g., candidates, employees) with inclusive web and social media communications.
- Partnering across the entire CIRES Administration to ensure that internal and external messages promote transparency and reflect our commitment to supporting and maintaining equity in the sciences.
- Respond to concerns with sensitivity and discretion. Partner with the CIRES Associate Director for Science and CIRES HR Director to surface and address employee concerns related to protected class or identity.
- Contribute to scholarship around DEI efforts.
Program Management
- Develop and maintain program evaluation activities, including tracking demographic information, culture data, organization-wide DEI activities, and other formative and summative indicators as appropriate.
- Identify and pursue new DEI opportunities in benefit of the CIRES community.
- Seek external funding and partners to enhance program activities, and lead or participate in sponsored research projects to increase DEI in environmental sciences.
- Track national trends and evidence-based strategies for integration into CIRES’ diversity and inclusivity programs and apply them to CIRES as appropriate.
Performs other duties as necessary.
What You Should Know
- Visa sponsorship is not offered for this position. Candidates needing visa sponsorship now or in the future will not be considered.
- This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, in Boulder, CO. The Director of DEI will be expected to sit at the David Skaggs Research Center NOAA federal facility one day a week.
- Selected finalists will be required to pass a federal background check for site access to the DSRC.
- All University of Colorado Boulder employees are required to comply with the campus COVID-19 vaccine requirement. New employees must provide proof of vaccination or receive a medical or religious exemption within 30 days of employment.
What We Can Offer
The annual hiring salary for this position is $80,000 - $125,000 Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require

- Master's degree plus five years' experience leading DEI-relevant initiatives.
For Appointments at the Research Scientist career track level:
- PhD degree plus five years' experience leading DEI-relevant initiatives.

- Understanding of national DEI trends in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- Ability to develop and lead evidence-based DEI initiatives in service of the CIRES DEI strategic plan and vision.

- Ability to address sensitive issues with sound judgment, empathy and discretion.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
