This is a full-time post based at UCH to start in February 2023, with the opportunity for a further extension. The post holder will be one of 26 SpRs/StRs, 12 Clinical Research Fellows and 11 CT1/2 level doctors and 6 Advanced Nurse Practitioners.The post is a Trust post and is not formally recognised for training at middle grade level; however it offers excellent experience in all aspects of haematology, including general & laboratory haematology, red cell disorders, haematological oncology & stem cell transplantation. The training and education opportunities are identical to those of SpRs/StRs and we encourage uptake of all training opportunities and will support relevant courses for the candidate’s education and training needs.
There is a large haematology inpatient workload at UCH (average patient numbers 80-100). This gives current trainees on the rotation the opportunity to excel in the care of these intensively managed patients. There are also disease specific outpatient clinics for lymphoma, myeloma, acute leukaemia, MDS, CLL, CML, MPD, allogeneic transplantation, red cell disorders, coagulation, TTP, paediatric and adolescent haematology, as well as general haematology. There are MDT meetings so that the trainee receives the appropriate overview in the decision making process in dealing with these groups of patients.
All junior/middle grade posts cover both inpatients, day care and outpatients on a rotational basis. The post-holder is based in one of the clinical areas during the day. The post-holder may cover white cell/transplant/red cell/clotting/transfusion/laboratory slots. During on call periods the post-holder may also spend some time looking after haematology patients in the private unit (Harley Street at UCH), which is closely associated with the haematology department at UCH. The duration of the post is 6 months. The trainee will take part in the on call rota with prospective cover (band 1B). The post holder must be flexible and prepared to cover the clinical needs of the Service on a day-to-day basis.
The training and education opportunities are identical to those of SpRs and we encourage uptake of all training opportunities and will support relevant courses for candidate’s education and training needs (as outlined below). The post will offer excellent experience in malignant and non-malignant haematology, under the close supervision of the lead consultants for those disease subspecialties and could lead to the opportunity to sub-specialise. There is a strong team approach in a well-supported environment and an emphasis on multi-disciplinary team working.
They will be working across the Haematology Service at the UCH and be involved with supervising the 10 departmental CT1/2 level doctors while working in close liaison with the attending consultants.
