Responsibilities :

  • Working under direct supervision, learns how to support the underwriting function at Westfield.
  • Reviews individual accounts learning exposure identification and acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards. Sets up new business and/or renewal business applications for quoting, coordinates timely turnaround with underwriter, and reviews quote for accuracy.
  • Gathers outstanding information from producers and customers and manages issue instructions when an order is received from the producers/customer.
  • Learns how to review individual new applications for commercial lines accounts. Determines acceptability of risk (under guidance/supervision) in accordance with company guidelines and standards by reviewing the application and risk for exposure identification.
  • Notifies agencies/producers of adverse underwriting decisions, underwriting requirements, status, and declinations. Answers questions and/or researches answers for agencies/producers, policyholders and/or other external contacts. Refers questions that they are unable to answer/find an answer for and escalates issues to others as necessary. May negotiate with producers (with assistance) to reach positive and profitable outcomes
  • Develops relationships with key producers, agency personnel, other distribution partners, and external/internal customers. Responsible for maintaining and strengthening the established relationship with agency personnel, producers, other distribution partners, local and home office team members, and the customer.
  • Learns to analyze, make decisions on, and process policy new business applications, endorsements, and renewals for multiple lines of insurance in support of company premium growth, policy retention, premium adequacy, and customer-focused quality of new and in force business.
  • Evaluates and updates policy information that supports premium generation, policy review, and assembly. This may include agency/producer or business partner quote support, coverage review (such as verification of discounts and surcharges), error corrections, risk factors, correct classification, and premium growth opportunities.
  • Develops underwriting acumen. Reviews system submitted requests (e.g. applications, endorsements, coverage increases, inspections) including agent/producer inquiries to identify type of risk and if underwriting referral is necessary. Updates policy coverages, reviews inconsistent coverages and determines if additional action is necessary. Adheres to service level commitments and phone protocols.
  • Collaborates with other Westfield teams (e.g. Customer Care Center, Mail Center, and Claims) to accomplish department service, quality, and profitability goals. Assists the Legal department with reviews and responses.
  • Learns and keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends, internal processes and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • 1+ year(s) of general work experience.
  • Experience working with customers including strong and consistent customer service.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills resulting in the ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills needed to manage workflow efficiently.
  • Experience entering and/or transferring data through a system or process.
  • Proficient use of various core systems, office and computer equipment and software packages.
  • High School diploma, GED, or commensurate work experience.
  • Physical essential functions: ability to work 40 hours in an office environment (sitting, standing, on a computer, etc.), operate office related technology (computer, phone, etc.), travel as required.
