Position Summary
The University of Wisconsin La Crosse College of Business Administration (CBA) invites applications for two Academic Advisor positions to begin after July 1, 2023. Either a 12-month or 10-month annual appointment is possible depending on department needs.
The College of Business Administration (CBA) Academic Advisor is a member of the CBA Dean’s Office team and will report to the College of Business Administration Academic Advising Manager. The Advisors engage students in decision-making processes and promote appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. They maintain appropriate confidentiality, update student advising records, and contribute to the development and delivery of academic advising-related events and programs. The advisors work to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Finally, they strive to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
Job Responsibilities:
The College of Business Administration (CBA) Academic Advisor is a member of the CBA Dean’s Office team and will report to the College of Business Administration Academic Advising Manager. They maintain appropriate confidentiality, update student advising records, and contribute to the development and delivery of academic advising-related events and programs. The advisors work to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Finally, they strive to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
Job Responsibilities:
- Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
- Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match the appropriate field of study/career options; educates students about experiential opportunities and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
- Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
- Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
- Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
- Proactively engages students as needed
- Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
- Utilizes available data to create advising structure and events in support of CBA strategic initiatives
- Provides direction to students on a variety of academic processes and policies including graduation requirements, academic standing, and enrollment
- Collaborates with students, faculty, advisors, and staff to determine student needs related to advising and implement/support group advising and programming
- Participate in regular departmental meetings and collaborates with faculty, staff, employers, and community partners.
- Supports Dean’s office initiatives and represents the CBA at campus and community events

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- Experience in advising, teaching, or direct student support; or relevant business experience
- Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to build rapport with students and knowledge of approaches to student development
- Demonstrated expertise in using office software packages and email
- Ability to share complex information in a clear and organized manner in both verbal and written forms to a variety of audiences
- Demonstrated experience developing and facilitating programs/workshops
- Experience fostering and promoting the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field
- Experience advising college students on academic and career-related concerns
- Ability to prioritize and utilize good time management practices
- Ability to be thorough, consistent, and accurate in the interpretation of policies
- Demonstrated knowledge of student records systems

Description of College / Department / Program / Division / Unit
The College of Business Administration is one of four colleges at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The CBA consists of six academic departments and one non-academic department which is the Small Business Development Center.
Six of the college’s seven academic programs are housed in an academic department (Accountancy, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Management, and Marketing) except for the International Business program which is managed by the CBA International Business Advisory Committee (IBAC). There are eight majors and seven minors in the undergraduate curriculum. The college also participates in the University of Wisconsin online consortium Master of Business Administration (MBA).
The CBA has an outstanding reputation for the high quality of its faculty, programs, staff, and most importantly its students. The CBA is fully accredited by AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) – the premier national and international accreditation authority. The college maintains active collaborations within the region and community and with numerous educational institutions in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere.
The College of Business Administration maintains an active Assurance of Learning Program to ensure both the undergraduate and graduate programs are assessed and evaluated on a regular basis to foster successful student learning. The planning and assessment efforts are guided by a task force of knowledgeable and enthusiastic faculty and instructional academic staff. Assurance of Learning supports the AACSB accreditation principles of accountability and continuous improvement.
