Position overview
Commercial Banking (CB) Strategy is a dedicated internal strategy consulting function. The Head of CB Strategy is a member of the CB Operating Committee and reports directly to the CB CEO. We focus on strategic problem-solving across business, product, and functional areas, with the collective goal of improving CB's operating and financial performance, client experience and employee productivity. Typical projects are commissioned by C-suite executives and focus on solving large, complex, and critical problems straddling strategy, business growth, operating model, and organizational design. CB Strategy also plays an integral role in helping formulate and articulate CEO-level communications for events like JPMC Investor Day or JPMC Operating Committee (OC) Strategy Offsite.
The CB Strategy team is comprised of highly talented individuals that have strategic problem solving and analytical skills, combined with a deep understanding of the business. Typical projects have 2-5 Strategy team members, require close collaboration with business and functional partners, and range from 1-4 months in length, depending on complexity and scope.
Job responsibilities :
- Own and lead a portfolio of 2-4 strategy projects, leading to actionable outcomes for senior leaders to take forward
- Direct strategic thinking and approach, guiding teams with the most complex aspects of problem solving
- Craft and deliver clear and coherent data-driven narratives, to enable senior stakeholder buy-in on key opportunities and recommendations
- Influence strategic agenda by being an objective thought partner and advisor to senior leaders
- Take a leadership role in generating new business growth ideas, and staying abreast of market trends
- Direct project portfolio and mobilize teams with the right mix of skills, experience, and backgrounds for each project
- Actively invest in building and developing talent, and support strategic career planning
- Lead broader team efforts, including recruiting, staffing decisions, and performance management
Sample projects include:
- Assess growth opportunities - geographic, industry or product
- Inform product or solutions strategic roadmap by identifying unmet or emerging client needs
- Refine client segmentation and / or client coverage models
- Understand emerging trends or new entrants to evaluate impact and potential action
- Assess operating models for optimization opportunities, including redesign or automation
- Support creation of CEO-level executive communications
Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills :
- 8+ years of experience at a top-tier management consulting firm or at an internal consulting / corporate strategy team, including 4+ years of experience motivating and leading teams
- Proven ability overseeing a portfolio of projects from inception to recommendation, and creating conditions for successful change management
- Demonstrated experience managing and collaborating with cross-functional partners
- Excellent judgement and decision-making abilities
- Experience working in or with the Financial Services industry required, preferably in the Commercial / Wholesale Banking space
- Knowledgeable on disruptive business models and trends including digital marketplaces, AI/ML, API connectivity, etc.
- MBA or relevant master's degree preferred
