Communications Specialist, Principal (Internal HSPH applicants only)
Job description
Candidates with strong formal and informal communication skills who enjoy working as a part of a team, and who bring creative campaign management and multichannel content development experience are encouraged to apply. Experience supporting the public sector and a drive to help people are a plus.
About this position type:
This is a full-time, benefit earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of Hennepin County's Human Services and Public Health department to apply for this position.
This position is internally classified as a Communications Specialist, Principal.

In this position, you will:
- Work with county partners to coordinate, create and implement communication plans, strategies, and messages.
- Manage projects, including assigning work to graphic designers and communications specialists.
- Write and produce strategic communications products according to best practices (i.e., usability, accessibility, plain language, and branding).
- Coordinate and optimize campaigns, helping to develop creative multichannel content components.
- Communicate with the public, staff, community leaders, county administration, elected officials, and the media.
- Support special events, press conferences, and other outreach efforts.
- Represent the county in partner meetings and as spokesperson during crisis and media response moments.
- Coordinate and deliver content that is consistent with the county’s focus on disparities reduction.
- One of the following:
- Seven years or more of related professional experience in strategic communications supporting a broad range of programs, projects, and services.
- Two years or more of college and five years or more of related professional experience in strategic communications supporting a broad range of programs, projects, and services.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in journalism, English, communications, mass communications, marketing, media studies, public administration or a closely related field and three years or more of related professional experience in strategic communications supporting a broad range of programs, projects, and services.
- Experience:
- Managing creative campaigns including developing multi-media content components.
- Working in communications or public relations in support of the public sector.
- Planning and creating content for publication (i.e., brochures, flyers, reports, websites).
- Using Microsoft Office Suite, SiteCore, SharePoint, Workfront and/or GovDelivery.
- Supervising others.
- Ability to:
- Work independently and collaboratively.
- Work under deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Respond accordingly to crisis situations.
