Job description
Since its inception in 1985, the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University has made a name for itself as the most capable university-based aviation research center in the United States providing research, design, testing, certification and training to the aviation manufacturing industry, government agencies, educational entities and other clients that can benefit from our services. NIAR is regularly seeking the provision of engineering services on a contract basis. Please note that all services are provided pursuant to a Professional Services Agreement, which must be executed prior to being assigned any work.
Summary of Responsibilities:
This position will support various diverse customer program efforts as an independent contractor consulting as a Systems Safety Engineer.
Essential Functions:
- Coordinates and manages all aspects of the system safety process for multiple products and in support of various diverse customer programs.
- Develops and drives the safety case for systems based on customer and regulatory requirements for safety and reliability.
- Employs safety analysis techniques, which will be performed on aircraft projects.
- Communicates flow-down safety requirements to the engineering team and ensures such requirements are documented in appropriate plans, processes, and procedures.
- Works with peers to develop and evolve processes for safety critical hardware and software based on customer and regulatory requirements.
- Effectively and regularly communicates with University employees, customers, and regulators, as appropriate.
- Prepares and delivers presentations for internal partners and customers.
- Participates in safety review meetings and system design meetings to ensure that system safety processes are being appropriately implemented.
- Works in a team environment by providing inputs to engineers, performing analyses, and writing reports.
Minimum Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
- 5 years of experience in System Safety Analysis.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience working on FAA Part 23 and Part 25 aircraft.
- Experience working with ARP 4754A, ARP 4761, DO-178B/C, DO-254, AS9100, MIL-HDBK-217, NPRD & EPRD (Non-Electrical Parts Reliability Data & Electrical Parts Reliability Data).
- Experience with safety artifacts, FHAs (Functional Hazard Assessment), FMEAs (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis), PTC-Windchill or equivalent, SSAs (System Safety Assessment), Fault Trees (CAFTA, Isograph-RWB, Top Event), and other safety analyses.
- Practical experience in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering.
- Knowledge of and experience with human factors.

- Travel up to 10% of the time is required.

- Time management skills to support multiple concurrent projects.
- Proficient in use of standard Microsoft Office programs.
- Reliability and maintainability of engineering knowledge.
