Description of Work Unit
Housing & Dining Services (HDS) is a multifaceted auxiliary organization responsible for management of on-campus housing facilities, residential dining, conferences, and the CSU Mountain Campus. Other areas within HDS include the RamCard, communications, sustainability, facilities, human resources, technology services, workplace inclusion, talent management, outreach, and business services. Approximately 450 full-time staff and 1,700 hourly and student staff serve the nearly 8,000 students who live on campus, as well as numerous campus and community guests. We strive to provide our residents and guests with safe living environments, quality dining, and exceptional co-curricular experiences. We accomplish this through sound fiscal and operational management strategies, and an emphasis on the development of programs and services that are designed to enhance personal growth and global engagement. Our staff exemplify our values of customer first service, commitment to students and staff, integrity, respect and teamwork, inclusiveness and diversity, innovation, and stewardship in support of the CSU Principles of Community. University Housing is responsible for 15 on-campus residence halls and four apartment communities housing nearly 8000 residents ranging from first-year students to families. The mission is to create vibrant and inclusive communities throughout students’ on-campus housing experience, while enhancing learning, personal/social growth, and global engagement. Our goal is to provide University Housing staff inclusive environments that fosters holistic professional development, which supports their work with students, campus partners and guests in a variety of areas in their lives and develops learning communities where residents can thrive and be retained as successful students.

Position Summary
The Coordinator for Diversity and Inclusion is responsible for fostering an environment conducive to both personal and professional growth for students, and achieving the objectives of a successful University Housing program that connects to the academic mission of CSU. Primary responsibilities associated with this student-centered position may include the following: selecting, training, supervising and evaluating undergraduate student staff; serving as an educator for staff and students around issues of diversity, inclusion and social justice; participating in long term and strategic planning; mentoring students related to academic success; developing and nurturing student leaders; advising student groups; developing and implementing programs; providing individual assistance to students; and other duties as assigned. The Coordinator will carry out their responsibilities under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Inclusion and Student Engagement.

The selected candidate will be well-organized and able to work well under pressure with multiple and consistently changing deadlines. To be successful in the position, the Coordinator must have excellent interpersonal communication, organization, administrative skills and demonstrated experience with taking initiative. In addition, the Coordinator will need a strong ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with multiple constituents including campus offices, students, staff, faculty members and various other community groups.
In addition, experience working with diverse individuals such as non-traditional aged, religiously diverse, gender, international, people with disabilities, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender, and persons of color is essential to be effective in the Coordinator position.

This is a live-out optional position.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs and Higher Education or related field.
  • 2 years of full time experience in Student Affairs and/or Housing
  • Supervision of various levels of staff (i.e. paraprofessional, graduate etc).
  • Experience leading diversity. social justice and inclusion initiatives.
  • Experience working with people from a broad diversity of backgrounds.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Experience with analyzing and resolving conflict, team building, group dynamics
  • Experience with crisis management and ability for problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships.

  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director for Inclusion & Student Engagement, assist in providing leadership for the University Housing staff in the development of goals and objectives for Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Contribute to the University Housing vision, mission and values through participation in strategic planning, department goal setting and determining priorities.
  • Develop connections with staff in various university offices, including but not limited to Student Diversity Programs and Services, Police Department, CSU Health Network, Collaborative for Student Achievement, TiLT, etc., related to development and implementation of Diversity and Inclusion programs and initiatives.
  • Exhibit a working knowledge and understanding of the concepts of student development, student rights and responsibilities, and University/Housing policies and procedures through both statement and example.
  • Participate in university, divisional and department training and development activities.
  • Demonstrate professional commitment to diversity and social justice by involvement in teaching, research/creative activity, and service to the profession and/or cultural activities.
  • Provide information on current issues (locally/regionally/nationally) in Higher Education; specifically related to involvement, professional development and training opportunities.

  • Select, train, evaluate, and supervise 13 Inclusive Community Assistants (ICA), who are live-in undergraduate staff.
  • Develop and implement an on-going staff development plan for the ICAs and assist with development plan for other undergraduate student staff focused on diversity, inclusion and social justice.
  • Design and coordinate training and ongoing development for the Inclusive Community Assistants (ICA’s).
  • Develop, identify and lead the development, coordination, and facilitation of inclusion related workshops for University Housing professional development on topics related to diversity, inclusion and social justice.
  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate the training of full-time staff, Graduate Assistants, and paraprofessional staff, including Residence Hall Association (RHA) and National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) on diversity, inclusion and social justice.
  • Participate in the selection, training, and mentoring of full-time, graduate and paraprofessional staff for a 12-month operation.
  • Serve as a resource to University Housing professional, graduate staff, undergraduate student staff, student leaders, residence hall communities and campus when planning diversity and social justice programs for residential communities.
  • Assist in recruiting outstanding student leaders to apply for all paraprofessional positions within University Housing, Housing & Dining Services and across campus.
