Summary of Position:

The role of a Counselor in Training (CIT) is to be a mentor, teacher, guide, and support system for the children who attend camp. The CIT program is designed to prepare you to become a Camp Counselor for children ages 5 to 12. CIT’s will be paired with a counselor and will be responsible for assisting with a designated group during the day. Under the general supervision of the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director, CIT’s will assist their assigned Counselor with the planning, organization, supervision and implementation of a daily activity schedule for up to 15 elementary school aged children.

Pay Rate: $10.00 hourly.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of a specific statement from the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Acting as a positive role model/mentor to participants and volunteer counselors in training.
  • Helping to develop and lead daily activities with campers ranging from indoor and outdoor games, sports, fitness activities, arts and crafts that relate to the theme of the week.
  • Eating lunch and snack with campers.
  • Providing positive and thorough interactions.
  • Communicating regularly with Camp Counselors, Camp Directors and Recreation staff to ensure camp runs smoothly and efficiently.
  • Overseeing the enforcement of camp rules at all times.
  • Assisting with light-duty cleaning, and the setup and breakdown of tables and chairs.
  • Organize and maintain all equipment and supplies.
  • Perform regular visual inspections of camp equipment and notify supervisor of defective equipment.
  • Performing miscellaneous tasks as directed.


Desired Skills and Qualifications
:

  • Applicant must be 15-17 years of age or older
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience volunteering or attending a recreational camp setting, afterschool setting, daycare facility, or related activity is preferred.
  • Applicant must have the ability to work as a team member and coordinate with other staff in contributing to the goals of the program.
  • Applicant must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Applicant must have communication and listening skills.
  • Applicant must be able to follow policies and procedures.
  • Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of this role, with or without accommodation.
  • Applicant must have reliable transportation.
  • Applicant must be able to work a flexible daytime schedule
  • Regular and consistent attendance is required.


Mental and Physical Requirements
:

  • Ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
  • Ability to communicate orally and to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, explosives, water hazards, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.

Other Requirements
:

  • Applicant must clear a criminal background check and fingerprinting.
