Crime Scene Technician
Job description
JOB SUMMARY
Processes and maintains evidence and property on behalf of the City’s Police Department; reviews evidence and determines necessary laboratory testing; tracks and returns evidence to owners;; prepares and maintains various types of evidence records; processes and documents crime scenes; uses specialized techniques for evidence collection as needed and performs other related duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Develops latent prints on evidence and at crime scenes; processes vehicles and crime scenes for forensic evidence; analyzes evidence to determine laboratory testing to be performed; photographs, packages, and transports evidence to crime lab.- Files, tracks, and maintains custody and control of evidence; coordinates the return of evidence to owners.
- Provides recordings of interviews, in-car videos, photo discs and lab results as required by the District Attorney’s Office and/or for court testimony. Delivers evidence to the District Attorney’s Office and testifies in municipal, county, state, or federal courts.
- Researches cases through the Police Department, Municipal Court and the District Attorney’s Office; identifies evidence ready for destruction; and Prepares property and evidence for destruction or other disposal – including hazardous and biological materials.
- Assists the Evidence and Property Supervisor with planning, organizing, storing, and processing evidence and property in the Evidence/Property Section in accordance with State laws, City Ordinances, and Department policies and procedures.
- Miscellaneous:
- Evidence and property intake.
- Develop proficiency in fingerprint comparison to known subjects or previously submitted fingerprints.
- Process crime scenes, collect evidence, photograph evidence and scenes, and document actions in department reports.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
- Determines correct storage methods for various types of evidence.
- Determine eligibility for evidence submission and appropriate packaging for laboratory submission, determines eligibility for evidence and property disposal and determines types of evidence collection materials to be purchase for field personnel.
- Determine resources and actions needed at crime scenes.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Associate’s Degree or 60 college hours in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
- Three (3) years evidence /crime scene technician or law enforcement related field experience is preferred.
- Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
- Required to complete training and receive Basic Certification for Property and Evidence Technician within 18 months of hire date.
- Required to complete training and examination to receive Crime Scene Certification within 18 months of hire date.
JOB DIMENSIONS
- Must be able to read/comprehend regulations governing the processing and maintenance of evidence, criminal code/software manuals, and laboratory reports; must be able to prepare evidence records and reports.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are required; must be able to maintain positive working relationships with law enforcement personnel, the District Attorney’s Office, crime laboratories, vendors, and the general public.
- Must understand proper protection, handling, and disposal of hazardous and biological materials.
- Position has assigned call out and is subject to varying work hours.
