Overview

Work-based learning (WBL) is a proactive approach to bridging the gap between high school and high-demand, high-skill careers in Tennessee. Students build on classroom-based instruction to develop employability skills that prepare them for success in postsecondary education and future careers. Through experiences like internships, apprenticeships, and paid work experience, juniors and seniors (16 years or older) may earn high school credit for capstone WBL experiences. WBL coordinators are educators who are trained and certified by the department to coordinate these WBL experiences for students.


Responsibilities

Plan, deliver and assess effective instruction that is tightly aligned with State standards.

  • Designs lessons based on best practices with clear learning targets and measurable goals aligned with State standards and/or unit outcomes. Frequently plans collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Conveys high expectations while using multiple effective strategies, materials, and classroom practices that involve and motivate students while differentiating instruction to meet students’ needs.
  • Uses colleagues and own self-reflection on instructional practice to continually improve instruction.

Classroom Management & Relationships:

  • Fosters a well-structured and engaging learning environment by utilizing effective classroom procedures and routines while showing caring, respect, and fairness for all students.

Family & Community:

  • Consistently develops strong relationships with students’ families while diligently informing parents of expectations, positive news, and/or concerns about their children.
  • Provides opportunities for parents to be involved in their children’s learning.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Actively seeks out opportunities to collaborate with colleagues and other stakeholders in order to improve teaching & learning.
  • Reflects on own instruction and leadership while contributing ideas, expertise, and time to the mission and goals of the school.

Industry Engagement:

  • Significant industry engagement is required and includes, but is not limited to, setting professional expectations for quality of work, mentoring students through a project and providing feedback, and evaluating employability skill development.
  • Supervise each student in workplace-based experiences such as internships, co-op, and apprenticeships.

Other Responsibilities:
  • Acts in a professional, respectful, and welcoming manner at all times, including reporting to work as scheduled/on-time and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Adheres to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law.
  • Ensures compliance with district, state, and federal policies, regulations, and laws.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • May operate a motor vehicle to conduct various work activities.

Qualifications


Knowledge/Education/Experience:

  • Any current educator holding an Occupational or Academic Teaching license (with a Secondary 6-12 endorsement) is eligible to be a Work Based Learning teacher (teacher of record) if they complete a Work Based Learning Certification Training. Work-Based Learning
  • Must hold a current WBL certification or be eligible to complete the WBL certification within 1 year of start date.
  • Must maintain certificate and recertify every two (2) years.
  • Must maintain a valid driver license in the United States

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills to deal effectively with students, educators, parents, and community members.
  • Demonstrate excellent planning, organizational, problem-solving, decision-making, and time management skills.

Compensation:
Salary is based on a combination of relevant education and experience.
