Job description
Position Highlights:
- Establish cell cultures, process samples, and perform staining techniques to detect specific DNA sequences or chromosomal aberrations in cells obtained from hematologic blood, bone marrow, and tissue samples.
- Analyzes and records FISH probe results using a fluorescent automated scanning system or a manual fluorescent microscope and reports findings to the pathologist for review and interpretation.
- Analyzes and records chromosome results using a brightfield automated scanning system or a manual brightfield microscope and reports findings to the pathologist for review and interpretation.
- Additional assigned duties include laboratory equipment maintenance; quality control and quality assurance activities; evaluation of new procedures and equipment; training of technologists, residents, fellows, and other medical staff; data entry and utilization of a laboratory information system; writing and revising technical procedures; and other duties required to maintain the smooth operation of the department, such as clerical duties, reagent preparation, and inventory control.
- The cytogenetic technologist exercises broad independent judgment and decision making abilities and requires minimal oversight to complete assigned tasks.
- The cytogenetic technologist possesses superior organizational skills, demonstrates a great deal of initiative, and is capable of working very independently.
- This position will work under the scientific direction of the department Medical Director.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Will have a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Biologic Science.
- Has ASCP(CG) certification.
- Florida State Medical Technologist, Cytogenetics Specialty.
- Would have 3 years’ or more experience in molecular pathology, medical technology or related field to include experience related to FISH laboratory testing including, processing of specimens, and interpretation of both hematologic and paraffin embedded tissue samples.
- Sound technical knowledge of specialty as it relates to test validation, performance, QC, and QA activities.
Credentials and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Biologic Science.
- Florida State Medical Technologist, Cytogenetics Specialty.
- Must possess 12 months experience in molecular pathology, medical technology, or related field to include experience related to FISH laboratory testing including, processing of specimens, and interpretation of both hematologic and paraffin embedded tissue samples.
