Detective Investigator Trainee: Organized Crime Task Force (OCTF) – Buffalo

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking qualified candidates for Detective Investigator
Trainee positions in the Organized Crime Task Force (OCTF) - Buffalo. Candidates should be
hard working, motivated and committed to public service on behalf of the people of the State of
New York.

The role of the OCTF is to conduct complex, long term investigations into various types of
organized criminal activity. The majority of the Unit’s investigations utilize advanced and
specialized investigative techniques such as physical surveillance, court authorized
eavesdropping of telephones, businesses, vehicles, and computers, as well as search warrants,
which include the use of still and video photography. The nature of the investigations conducted
by OCTF includes traditional organized crime - gambling, loan sharking, extortion, and
narcotics, among others.

Minimum qualifications:

High school diploma, or equivalency, and either a two (2) year or four (4) year college degree or
other qualifying law enforcement curriculum.

Must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License with the ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Must have the ability to successfully complete all requirements to obtain NYS basic police
academy certification if not current holding same.

The NYS Public Officer’s Law requires that all police officers be citizens of the United States of
America and reside within the State of New York at the time of appointment.

Candidates should possess strong writing, analytical and organizational skills. Candidates will
be required to combine traditional investigative skills with strong interpersonal skills and the
ability to work as part of an investigative team.

Preferred qualifications and skills:

Cultural competence to understand and effectively respond to cultural differences for
involvement in undercover operations and/or otherwise to be inserted into investigations and
interactions with targets across cultures.

Strong communications, interpersonal and teamwork skills.

Proficiency with computers, common word processing applications, use of search engines and
internet research.

The ability to read, write, speak and understand a second language, in addition to English.
Fluency in Spanish is especially preferred.


Performance of the duties may require frequent, unscheduled work on evenings and weekends
and requires 24/7 availability. This position is in the exempt class, and incumbents serve at the
pleasure of the Attorney General. The Hire Rate for this position is $59,793.
