Development Manager

Position Title: Development Manager

Reports to: Executive Director

Direct Reports: N/A

Work Schedule: Part-time 25 hours per week. Monday - Friday, with flexible schedule. Some remote work may be appropriate.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly

Position Summary: The Development Manager is responsible for leading the development aspects of Cancer Connection, ensuring that the organization has the financial resources needed to fulfill its mission in accordance with the revenue goals in the annual budget. The Development Manager’s primary focus is individual and business/organizational giving, including annual giving, major giving, planned giving, fundraising events, and sponsorship. The Development Manager leads the implementation and assessment of Cancer Connection’s development strategies, working closely with the Executive Director, any Development Committee, or Task
Force of the Board in the execution of the development plan.

Essential Responsibilities:
Development Strategy

  • Design and implement short and long-term development and communication strategy to enhance visibility and financial support of the organization, in partnership with the Executive Director.
  • Lead evaluation of fundraising activities (appeals, events, sponsorship, etc.) for effectiveness and improvement. Identify and recommend new or different approaches as appropriate.

Donor Cultivation, Stewardship & Solicitation

  • Develop relationships with donors and stakeholders, inspiring support of Cancer Connection’s mission.
  • Manage ongoing donor stewardship program, including coordinating the donor stewardship efforts of the Executive Director, any Development Committee, or Task Force of the Board.
  • Identify, research, and cultivate new major gift prospects.
  • Identify and support donor meetings with the Executive Director, and/or Board and Committee Members.
  • Support stewardship of major donors and special project donors with the Executive Director.
  • Manage the annual appeal, including writing and developing associated materials in partnership with the Executive Director
  • Collaborate with Data Manger to best utilize and maintain donor database
  • Collaborate with Data Manger and Center Administrator to maintain appropriate processes for gift handling, recording, and timely and personalized donor acknowledgement.

Fundraising Events

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute fundraising events, in partnership with event committees.
  • Serve as staff liaison to event planning committees and coordinate event volunteers.

Key Duties

  • Collaborate on development duties completed by Center Administrator and Data Manager (who are responsible for gift entry, letter production, event support, and other development assistance).
  • Support grant submission process through opportunity, deadline, and progress tracking and submission assistance. Provide occasional writing support for grants and or material coordination as required.
  • Provide external communications support as required. Represent Cancer Connection with community stakeholders as assigned.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director and other staff to manage social media accounts and content creation.
  • Approach work with an attitude of continuous improvement.
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned by Executive Director or designee.

Qualifications:

  • Deep appreciation for Cancer Connection’s mission, values, and approach
  • High capacity to engage stakeholders and develop relationships.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and follow through. Strong attention to detail.
  • Exemplary written communications skills, including development of clear, strategic and compelling fundraising messaging; effective and ethical storytelling; attention to word choice and grammar; copyediting.
  • Sense of humor
  • Strong research and data analysis skills.
  • Minimum 7 years of work experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of closely related experience (additional preferred), in fundraising, marketing, donor stewardship, or communications.
  • Successful project and/or event management experience.
  • Prior experience managing confidential information appropriately with high level of discretion.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work to meet deadlines
  • High capacity to work and communicate effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (word and excel).
  • Demonstrate professionalism at all times, including appreciating and supporting those you work with, showing respect to all Cancer Connection participants, demonstrating high ethical and moral standards, and acting with honesty and fairness in all of your dealings with others.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation for work related travel.
  • Knowledge of and prior experience with one or more of the following growth areas: major gift cultivation, planned giving, peer-to-peer fundraising, growing fundraising capacity, capital campaigns, business and organizational sponsorship programs, grant writing, event planning and coordination.
  • Proficiency with external communications and development of fundraising collateral including basic desktop publishing, website editing, and e-newsletter development.
  • Prior experience using donor tracking software and giving platforms.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred

Physical Demands/Requirements /Working Conditions:
The physical environment is an office setting that is sensitive to individuals who are experiencing cancer-related health concerns and compromised immune systems. This position will often connect with participants and caregivers who are experiencing a cancer diagnosis. Job functions are varied between a stationary position, while using a computer, and interactive. Position may require lifting, carrying, standing/stationary positions. Accommodations will be made for the individual, if needed, when the requirements and conditions are not able to be performed safely by the employee.
