Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for individuals who wish to pursue a career in Dietetics but do not wish to proceed through a conventional higher education route.We are offering a position as an Apprentice Dietitian, which will entail part time clinical work with the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust Dietetics team, and part time degree level study with Sheffield Hallum University (remotely).
Successful candidates will work as a Dietetic assistant while undergoing their studies, this will enable them to apply the knowledge gained during their Dietetics course.
This is a fantastic opportunity to qualify as a Dietitian, without committing to full time University Study, providing the ability to earn whilst gaining a professional qualification.

This post holder will be responsible for supporting Registered Dietitians in planning and implementing dietetic care for patients in ward, clinic and community environments. The post holder will also participate in training of other health care professionals as well as delivering group education to patients and to community groups
This role also entails working alongside qualified Dietitians to assist in the application of knowledge gained from University Attendance.
The post holder must uphold both their clinical workplace commitments and those for their academic study, completing all necessary work by the deadline and completing clinical placements to a satisfactory level. Ongoing progression in University study is essential for this position, employment will be unable to continue without academic attendance and eventual degree level qualification.
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 286,700, providing inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development of our Pleck Road site was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities. Work is also well underway on its multi-million pound new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre which will house a new Emergency Department (including Children’s Emergency Department), co-located Paediatric Assessment Unit, Acute Medical Unit and Urgent Care Centre. This is scheduled for completion this year.
We provide high quality, friendly and effective community health services from some 60 sites including Health Centres and GP surgeries. Covering Walsall and beyond, our multidisciplinary services include rapid response in the community and home-based care, so that those with long-term conditions and the frail and elderly, can remain in their own homes to be cared for wherever appropriate.
- Communicate with individuals, their family and carers and the multidisciplinary team regarding nutrition and dietetic advice and interventions.
- Contribute to assessment of the nutritional needs of individuals, groups and populations, undertaking this autonomously on completion of apprenticeship.
- Contribute to formulating individualised dietetic treatment plans to promote optimal health and nutritional status, undertaking this autonomously on completion of apprenticeship.
- Monitor the progress of nutrition and dietetics interventions with individuals and contribute to updating treatment plans according to changes in clinical condition. Report back patient progress and informing the registered dietitian of any problems or concerns.
- Support a designated caseload of individuals with regard to clinical priorities and effective use of time. In year 3 onwards you will be expected to manage your own appropriate caseload
- Under guidance from the registered dietitian, collaborate with individuals to set dietary targets to improve patient compliance.
- Work with the dietitian to co-ordinate the dietetic elements of care in the safe discharge and/or referral of individuals, undertaking this autonomously on completion of apprenticeship.
- Provide education and training to individuals, groups, students and other health care professionals.
