Job Summary

Oversees the management and daily operations of district facilities and safety. The successful candidate must be excellent with organizational and communication skills.


Essential Duties -

  • Recruits, hires, and oversees the evaluation of custodial and maintenance staff.
  • Plans and directs the work of all building and grounds personnel involved in maintenance and custodial operations on school properties and related facilities.
  • Assess, evaluate, and determine proper action to be taken to complete repairs in an effective and timely manner utilizing school policy, fundamental maintenance practices, and prioritizing decision making.
  • Conducts routine and periodic inspections of schools and facilities.
  • Analyzes needs and makes recommendations for procurement of materials and supplies.
  • Prepares specifications and submits cost estimates of proposed work activities.
  • Supervises building and grounds maintenance inventory, and implements a system of controls.
  • Provides training and professional development for maintenance and custodial staff, as needed.
  • Conducts safety inspection, accident investigations, and training programs to create a safe environment.
  • Develops and executes annual priority list for maintenance of buildings.
  • Supervises facility usage and rentals.
  • Ensures compliance with State Facility Department regulations.
  • Oversees the security of the district.
  • Oversees compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Communicates with internal and external publics to develop and maintain positive school/community relationships.
  • Annually update District safety and security plans and provides district guidelines for safety.
  • Provides professional development to district staff and students in regards to safety and security of school related activities and events.
  • Work collaboratively with public safety agencies and serves as liaison between school and community.
  • Provide in-service training to administrators and staff to better prepare to deal with security related matters.
  • Keep the administration informed of matters related to school safety and security.
  • Assist with the development and evaluation of security and crisis plans.


Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises custodial and maintenance staff. Carries out supervisor responsibilities in accordance with district policies and applicable laws. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training employees. In addition, plans, assigns, and directs work of others.


Education and/or experience

Bachelor's degree and experience in custodial/maintenance supervision, preferred.


Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports, and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of administrators, teachers, and/or employees of the district.


Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret and extensive variety of technical information in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


Other Skills and Abilities

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Board policies.


Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and stand. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, an depth perception. While performing the duties of the job the employee will visit various buildings for inspection and meetings. The employee may frequently lift up to 25 lbs.


The noise level in the work environments is usually quiet to noisy. Work may be performed both indoors and outdoors.
