Summary:
The Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment fosters, builds, and promotes a culture of assessment that will facilitate continuous improvement in student learning at the University of Illinois Springfield and ensure compliance with HLC accreditation standards. The Director will work with faculty and staff to ensure that (1) the institution has effective processes for assessment of student learning and for achievement of learning goals in its academic offerings, (2) members of the faculty use the information gained from assessment to improve student learning, (3) the institution's processes and methodologies to assess student learning reflect good practice, including the substantial participation of faculty, instructional and other relevant staff members and (4) coordinates and/or produces, under the direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education reports and analyses related to undergraduate student success.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Oversees the development of academic degree program assessment plans in consultation with faculty.
- Oversees the technical aspect of academic assessment, including design of databases, learning outcomes, and curriculum maps; data collection and analysis of data related to the assessment plan.
- Directs faculty, staff and administrators in gathering, storing, analyzing and interpreting assessment data for their specific units/areas.
- Designs and delivers workshops, seminars and other assessment training activities for faculty and staff.
- Conducts evidence-based high-impact research and performs measurement studies in support of university-wide strategic plans, institutional effectiveness, cost effectiveness, and the development of policies.
- Creates data visualization standards and explores new analytical products to periodically raise those standards.
- Ensures compliance with HLC institutional accreditation standards.
- Keeps abreast of current assessment best practices and disseminates that knowledge across the university. Advocates with UEOs and deans for assessment and program review as a means of improving student learning and institutional effectiveness.
- Manages program assessment grant process.
- Manages internal and external communication of assessment activities and findings.
- Develops content for Institutional Effectiveness & Assessment web pages.
Minimum Qualifications:
A master’s degree from an accredited institution in a research- based field.
Two (2) years of experience in academic assessment including as faculty directly overseeing assessment functions.
Experience with the development of assessment methods for institutional/general education, program and course level learning outcomes.
Experience with using technology to facilitate the assessment process.
Strong commitment to strengthening diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. or Post-Graduate Certificate in Academic Assessment.
Prior success promoting a culture of assessment across a University.
Familiarity with Tableau.
Excellent organizational skills.
Prior experience working with the Accreditation Standards of the Higher Learning Commission or similar accreditation body.
Strong understanding of data management in higher education and experience in positions of progressively complex responsibility as related to institutional research, assessment, and analytics.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of current best practices in academic assessment, academic program review, and co-curricular assessment.
Ability to take initiative, make decisions, and work independently
Facility in manipulating, analyzing, interpreting, applying, and synthesizing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality quantitative and qualitative data from varying sources to prepare and present information effectively.
Proficiency with spreadsheet, database, presentation, and visualization software.
Ability to effectively engage and support faculty in the academic assessment process.
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse members of the university and higher education communities including faculty, staff, administrators, external reviewers and accreditors.
Strong integrity, flexibility and ability to adapt to changing requirements.
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to multi-task yet maintain close attention to detail and timeliness of work production.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to deal with a variety of information presented in oral or written formats.
Ability to deal with non-verbal behavior in assisting with problem/conflict resolution.
Travel Requirements:
5% Travel and present at assessment conferences.
