Job Description:
This position is responsible for organizing and administering the facility’s nursing services including establishing goals, developing policies and procedures, and ensuring adequate numbers and qualifications of staff are available to perform nursing services. He/she is responsible for the Infection Control (IC) program for the facility, including developing policies, establishing types of surveillance and criteria, collecting data, and implementing educational and/or corrective measures as needed.
The Director of Nursing must be familiar with legal and ethical aspects of health care services. Must have and maintain the ability to direct and instruct employees in duties, techniques, and principles, and must be able to maintain a good working relationship with other departments.
Oak Plains Academy is a comprehensive and highly structured 98-bed residential treatment program offering psychiatric residential treatment services to children and adolescents ages 7–14, struggling with emotional and behavioral issues. Residents receive an individualized treatment plan, geared to meet their personal needs. A professional team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, therapists, nurses, and teachers serve hundreds of children and adolescents annually with the common goal of treating and healing trauma and building resiliency in the residents we serve. Located on 20 acres of rolling hills in a rural setting, about 45 minutes from Nashville, Tennessee, Oak Plains Academy campus features a full-size gymnasium, dining hall, separate academic building, and four dormitories. Our wooded campus provides an excellent opportunity for outdoor recreational activities.

Essential Job Duties
To abide by and promote the philosophy, policies and procedures, goals and objectives, and the standards of care as set forth by Oak Plains Academy.
Interviews and selects adequate numbers of RN’s, ensuring that nursing staffing is at a safe level to ensure proper nursing care.
Set annual goals for the department and nursing staff development with a plan of action, timetable, and methodology for evaluation.
Provides a monthly nursing in-service education program designed to maintain/improve nursing skills. Establishes mechanisms to assess the effectiveness of these programs.
Develops Infection Control policies and procedures which comply with state licensing and JCHAO guidelines.
Determines types of surveillance and monitoring criteria for the Infection Control program and establishes appropriate data collection mechanisms.
Collects any analyzes pertinent data and responds to high-risk occurrences. Seeks corrective measures to ensure safety of staff and patients.
Provides facility-wide in-service regarding Infection Control during annual orientation and as needed.
Attends all Infection Control meetings and ensures that quarterly Infection Control reports are submitted to the Medical Staff for review/action.
Coordinates and directs nursing Performance Improvement activities including established monitoring criteria, collecting data, and submitting monthly reports to the Performance Improvement Director.
Stays abreast of new information about Infection Control such as prevention/corrective measures and high-risk situations.
Informs the Medical Director about problems or unusual occurrences which may impact on quality of patient care, nursing care, or nursing staffing function.
Promotes team spirit by presenting a positive approach to problem solving, including patients and staff in treatment decisions, and using judgment and professional behaviors.
Attends and/or sends a delegate to appropriate clinical meetings. Conducts quarterly nursing staff meetings.
Manages the Employee Health Program.

Oversee Medication Administration
Demonstrate all Service Excellence Standards and Principles.
Job Requirements:
- BSN required; must have State of Tennessee Registered Nurse License.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of behavioral health nursing clinical practices and management preferred.
- At least 3 years, demonstrated experience in progressively responsible management, and leadership role in either in a hospital, residential treatment center or acute care hospital required.
- Must have a good working knowledge of state and Medicaid regulations related to psychiatric health care, and of JCAHO guidelines. Must have the ability to organize, delegate, relate with and work effectively with others. Must have two years of experience treating children and adolescents.
- 21 years of age, with a valid driver license
