POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director, Regional Operations is responsible for organizing, developing and directing railcar inspection, repair and maintenance activities at designated mini-tracks, mobile units, rack points, contract and lessee shops in a manner that supports the Company’s strategy and profit plan. The primary responsibility of the Director is to provide daily direction to the assigned mobile mini/mini track locations ensuring railcars are repaired/maintained in the minimum amount of time while ensuring good customer relations. This is accomplished by managing the work activities of the Operation Managers who actively oversee 12 – 20+ locations within their span of control. He/she submits annual detailed budgets to management covering all mobile units, mini-track, rack point and contract shop operations under their direction. The incumbent has the responsibility to recommend and/or approve the hiring and termination of subordinate staff, to recommend salary adjustments, to recommend major capital equipment replacements/additions and to approve routine expenses. In addition, the Director will be responsible for identifying and developing high potential employees within their region as well as ensuring that all key positions have a formal succession plan in place.
  • Directs and coordinates daily operations within a designated region ensuring that consistent, efficient workflows are in place, yielding optimal productivity and performance that will maximize output and minimize costs.
  • Ensures that repaired railcars are returned to service in a minimal amount of time and at the lowest cost.
  • Maintains a budget set out for the region by controlling costs while ensuring expenditures have a positive impact on field operations revenue.
  • Manages on-site performance of field network through the development and use of meaningful metrics.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with lessees, repair shops and with other colleagues across the organization.
  • Resolves escalated issues requiring coordination with other departments to ensure all customer issues are satisfactorily resolved utilizing engineering, manufacturing, and other teams as needed.
  • Actively seeks out sales and growth opportunities to increase field revenues.
  • Trains and develops employees while ensuring all sites are appropriately staffed and enforcing safety rules while promoting quality processes.
SKILLS/SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to think strategically but influence and act tactically in a very “hands-on” way.
  • Working knowledge of data analysis and performance/operation metrics.
  • In depth knowledge of diverse business functions and principles (e.g. supply chain, finance, customer service, employee management etc.)
  • Willingness and ability to wear safety equipment for plant tours and visits to customer’s facilities.
  • Willingness and ability to travel outside of the normal place of work via car, train and airplane.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering; Business Administration or relevant experience in a similar role preferred
  • Previous P&L responsibility required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of related work experience leading or supporting multiple sites in a corporate environment required.
  • Technical knowledge of tank and freight cars along with repair methods, familiarity with AAR rules & regulations, knowledge of estimating and cost repairs is preferred.
