As a member of the Finance Team, the Division Controller is responsible for contributing to the financial integrity of Johnstone Supply by managing the daily operations of the JST Finance & Accounting Department, ensuring compliance with GAAP, accurate preparation of financial and managerial reports, as well as continuously improving processes and procedures for increased efficiency of the Finance & Accounting department. Additionally, this position directly supervises the Accounting Manager, AP Manager, AR Manager, and the Senior Consolidation Accountant.

Position responsibilities:
Staffing:
  • Manage department resources such as personnel, equipment, or supplies by identifying department needs, and obtaining and allocating resources to meet those needs.
  • Manage department staff by:
    • Conducting interviews in the hiring process and making hiring recommendations.
    • Overseeing the training, cross training and development of employees;
    • Coaching, counseling, mentoring, and disciplining employees, as necessary.
    • Conducting annual performance and developmental reviews.
Internal Controls:
  • Ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of the Finance & Accounting Department by assisting the Controller in -
    • Setting accounting policies and procedures;
    • Selecting accounting methods;
    • Ensuring compliance with GAAP; and
    • Continuously improving the Department with the use of technology, streamlined processes & workflow.
  • Monitor controls and procedures:
    • Cash Disbursements;
    • Cash Receipts; and
    • General Ledger.
Financial Reporting:
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial closing and analysis.
  • Prepare financial reports for the JST business owners for evaluation and planning purposes by collecting and formatting necessary information.
Operations:
  • Oversee daily operations of the JST Finance & Accounting department.
  • Audit – Assist with management of the annual audit by preparing audit schedules, providing auditors with substantiation and documentation, and coordinating the annual inventory test counts (or annual inventory, if needed) at the Distribution Centers.
  • Retirement Plan – Ensure the annual audit runs smoothly and is completed accurately in a timely manner.
  • Supplier Rebates –Supervise the Accounting Manager in ensuring that supplier rebates received are tracked, calculated, and paid to Distributors accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Finance Representative – Participate in inter-department teams by helping design, implement and monitor new policies and procedures.
  • External Request for Financial Information – Respond to requests for financial information from vendors, auditors, lenders, and shareholders.
  • M&A – occasionally assist with accounting due diligence for M&A targets and help with the integration of acquired businesses from an accounting perspective.
  • Establishes and maintains positive and constructive working relationships with other internal departments by serving as liaison to and establishing open lines of communication with department heads and managers.

Position requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Accounting/Finance from a four-year college or university; at least 10 years of hands on financial managerial experience in a fast-paced environment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • A CPA, CMA or MBA is preferred, but not required for this role.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Ability to create financial statements from given information.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State tax laws, and knowledge of internal control systems.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply human resource management principles, including hiring, training, and orienting, coaching, and evaluating employees.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Problem-solving skills: listening to, interpreting, and meeting the needs of others; diagnosing and rectifying problems.
  • Project management skills: establishing objectives, timelines, and deadlines; action planning to meet deadlines; evaluating current and future positions.
  • Ability to establish and continuously improve work procedures and systems.
  • Ability to collect data, evaluate results, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to lead and influence others to meet department, organization goals and overall Business Plan.
  • Ability to plan and direct the activities of subordinates.
  • Ability to write a verbal synopsis of financial status and activities.
  • Ability to effectively present information both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to listen to others to identify needs and concerns.
