The Program Coordinator II will coordinate all aspects of the Applied Practice Experience (APE)/Internship requirements of the public health graduate programs and will support students in the Graduate Program in Public Health and the Master’s in Health Administration program in the areas of applied practice and internships. The Program Coordinator II is a member of the Graduate School of Biomedical Science’s Public Health and Health Administration (PHHA) team and reports to the Director of Program Administration, PHHA. As a member of this team, the Program Coordinator II will partner closely with other team members who support related areas, including career development, alumni relations and networking, and professional development programming.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Coordinate public health practice and research-based practice initiatives within the Graduate Program in Public Health.
- Ensure the Applied Practice Experience (APE) requirement satisfies the accreditation criteria outlined by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) and that this program requirement is administered in a manner that complies with established criteria, policies, and best practices for such programs. Track student places, maintain records, and prepare relevant reports.
- Advise Public Health students on the program’s APE requirement. Meet with students to ensure they understand requirement criteria, providing on site selection based on assessment of professional goals, and orient students to the professional environment. Support students in development of the APE Proposal, and review submitted proposals, together with program leadership. Communicate approvals and next steps to the student and preceptor.
- Track and support in-progress internship and practice experiences. Advise students who encounter challenges during internships. Coordinate program-provided financial support when applicable. Confirm completion of the APE by conducting a thorough review of APE materials and completing check-out meetings.
- Coordinate process to support students in the Master’s in Health Administration (MHA) program to identify internship opportunities. Advise students on identifying, pursuing, and selecting internships, and on strategies for ensuring successful internship experiences. Maintain all necessary documentation for each internship and placement. As the MHA program grows, develop new structures and systems to scale support for increasing numbers of students and internships.
- Lead efforts to develop formal and informal partnerships related to applied practice and internship opportunities. Act as a liaison to MSHS departments and to external partners such as community organizations, for the purpose of increasing program visibility and developing new opportunities for students.
- Act as a liaison to preceptors for applied experiences and internships. Orient preceptors and practice sites to program expectations, and especially to the specifics of APE the process. Collaborate on project/internship plan development and provide support throughout the APE process.
- Maintain and update resources related to applied experiences and internships, including webpages.
- Working with other team members, plan and support a variety of events throughout the year, including seminars/workshops and lectures, APE requirement orientation, and showcases of practicum and internship experiences.
- Collaborate with the Department of Medical Education and the Office of Global
- Operations to organize and implement the Global Health Summer Program.
- Serve as the representative to external organizations related to the APE requirement and internships generally. Serve on the Practice Section for the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health.
- Through a variety of mechanisms, collect and track data related to outcomes and placement of students. Prepare reports for internal and external distribution summarizing placement outcomes and career progress of former students and postdoctoral trainees. Identify trends and opportunities for improvement/optimization.
- Maintain familiarity with developments in the public health and health administration fields, especially as related to applied practice experiences and internships, and in internship/advising aspects of education program administration.
- Assist the Director of Program Administration with other activities supported by the team and with intra-team collaboration and delegation.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience; Master’s degree preferred.
- Knowledge of internship requirements and advising practices. Experience advising students and/or preceptors on internships and applied experiences.
- Familiarity with public health education program and program requirements, including the APE requirement.
- Strong communication, networking, and relationship management skills. Ability to present to groups about program requirements and to represent the program externally.
- Comfort with relevant metrics and ability to demonstrate and report on measurable outcomes.
