Job Title: Elementary Principal

Salary Range: $102,300-$124,500/year Full time benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, voluntary short- term disability, CO PERA Retirement, Jeffco Empower Retirement and Paid Time Off

Work Year: 225 days

Location: Elementary Campus

Reports to: Executive Director

Summary

The Elementary Principal serves as the school leader for grades K – 6 by providing leadership, guidance, community building, instructional leadership, and human and financial resources management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership Duties:

  • Demonstrates commitment to Jefferson Academy’s Vision, Mission, Core Values and Principles of Academic Rigor and communicates this to school personnel, students, families and the community.
  • Models school values to the staff, students, parents, and the Jefferson Academy Board of Directors
  • Is a visible leader maintaining frequent contact with students and staff
  • Exercises a participatory management style with staff when possible
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing
  • Fosters a climate of innovation and growth
  • Facilitates activities for families and staff to encourage community and shared purpose

Educational Leadership Duties:

  • Coordinates implementation and refinement of curriculum with staff, with any significant changes to be approved by the

Executive Director.

  • Oversees the implementation of the Core Knowledge Curriculum, and helps coordinates continuity across K-12 learning
  • Administrates all school-based programs and services of resource personnel for the school
  • Assists staff in accommodating individual students needs and abilities
  • Monitors student progress, discipline, health, and safety
  • Recommends to the Executive Director, based on observations, any proposed improvement of instruction, school philosophy and school policies
  • Establishes annual measurable student performance goals for each year, based on identified areas of improvement and notifies Executive Director of established goal(s)
  • Assists Executive Director in evaluating the school’s progress on established priorities
  • Provides perspective on educational issues on a regular basis
  • Designs school event schedules, in accordance with the approved school calendar
  • Develops cooperation and teamwork within staff
  • Develops and implements an annual staff development program
  • Responsible for the implementation of school policies
  • Oversees accurate financial and policy records for the elementary school

Community Relations Duties:

  • Promotes and develops a professional, positive relationship between all JA campuses and JA Board of Directors
  • Seeks and considers the input of stakeholders in a timely fashion when appropriate
  • Provides information to community, and interested parties about the school, it’s programs and progress towards goals
  • Oversees the development of all printed material for the overall operation of the school
  • Serves as the liaison with the school district on administrative, operational, or educational matters for the elementary school
  • Ensures the recruiting, scheduling screening and training of volunteers within the school process is effectively implemented

Managerial Duties:

  • Works with the Executive Director, their business manager, and other principals and to develop the elementary school budget for each fiscal year
  • Completes reports required by various regulatory agencies such as U.S. Department of Education, the Colorado Department of Education (CDE), and Jefferson County Public Schools.
  • Delineates all responsibilities and authority for administrative, office and instructional staff, establishing lines of communication and supervision
  • Hires staff for the school in accordance with JA Board Policy 2.11, understanding that the Executive Director has final approval as needed
  • Develops enthusiasm and promotes positive moral among staff
  • Supervises the work of the school’s business manager
  • Supervises the work of the school’s administrative and office teams
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, conducts yearly evaluations on first level administrative team members
  • Prepares the yearly staff evaluation schedule in accordance with JA Board policies, and supervises evaluation of staff in compliance with those policies
  • Works with Facility Manager to develop a plan for building maintenance and repair
  • In accordance with approved budget and any other spending limitations established by Board policy, approves and authorizes: o Building maintenance o Building usage o School based activities and schedules o All other expenditures
  • In accordance with approved budgets and any other spending limitations established by JA Board policy, approves and authorizes the purchase and utilization of: o Material resources o Equipment o Supplies

Education and Experience

Advanced degree from an accredited institution, preferably in educational and/or business administration. Two or more years of experience as an administrator in a public or private school, or a position with equivalent responsibilities in government, private business or an institution of higher learning. Planning, budgeting, curriculum development and public relations experience.

Knowledge of the Colorado charter school law and operation of a charter school. Commitment to the Vision and Mission of Jefferson

Academy. Prior experience with Core Knowledge is preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Current Colorado-certified principal license preferred.

Skills, Knowledge, and Equipment

Demonstrated conflict management, problem solving, resource allocation, prioritization, data analysis, collaborative decision making, relationship building, group facilitation, writing, and speaking skills. Computer and technology skills which include Human

Resources; Financial Systems; and communications technology including software, Email, and voicemail are needed.

Decision Making

Ability to determine staffing levels and budget requirements; develop alternatives and make decisions in crises situations; utilize collaborative decision making skills; and apply good judgement to ensure student safety and carry out student discipline. Errors could lead to legal ramifications and compromise student safety and the learning environment, resulting in substantial embarrassment or cost to the school. Final decisions at the school site are the responsibility of this position.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises Assistant Principal, Dean of Students, Instructional Coach, Teachers, Classroom Assistants, Office Personnel,

Custodial Staff, classified employees, and special education personnel. Carries our supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Complexity of Work

Requires analytical skills, independent thinking, considerable judgement, and the ability to assess crises and make sound decisions quickly with little time or input from others. Must manage personnel, curriculum, student success, and discipline, and the building and school grounds. Must have a strong understanding of the JA culture and policies and be able to quickly analyze the impact of decisions on the student, school, district, and community.

Educational Delivery

Support the instructional programs of the school by supervising and evaluating teachers and administrators and by developing and implementing school instructional programs. Understand the philosophy of Core Knowledge (K-8) and Coordinated

Humanities/College Prep (9-12) educational practices, the processes of curriculum development and effective models of instruction and lead their implementation in the school. Manage the development of curriculum and instructional programs that recognize the contributions of diverse groups and foster success for all students regardless of gender, race, or disability. Use data to analyze the current state of student learning and serve as a catalyst for and manager of needed change. Understand and lead the use of technology in instruction. The majority of the time is spent at the school site

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment described here represents what an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

The hours may be long when specific needs arise, thus some extended schedules will be required. This is a position that must attend the needs of staff, administrators, Jefferson Academy Board of Directors, and parents. Work may consist of ten plus hour days with weekend work required from time to time. Adaptability to change is essential. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment varies from quiet to loud.
