Annual Salary: $51,571.52 - $62,695.36*
Monthly Salary: $4297.63 - $5,224.61*
Hourly Salary: $17.71 - $21.53

All Emergency Medical Technician positions are on a regular 24-Hour shift schedule.
  • Salaries reflect 40 regular hours plus additional overtime hours worked.
Practical Skills Exam, Oral Interview, and Chief's Interviews will take place on a later date yet to be determined.

We have an opening for the position of Emergency Medical Technician in our Fire Department. Under supervision, provides basic medical care and transport. Responds to emergency medical calls and other emergency calls. Participates in training, public education, station and equipment maintenance activities. Supervision is received from a Company Captain or designee. Direction is received through EMS protocols and the Escondido Fire Department EMS Coordinator. No supervision is exercised by EMTs.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Staffs Advanced Life Support Ambulances supporting a licensed Paramedic;

Responds to emergency medical service (EMS) calls; renders aid to injured and/or ill parties;

Responds to non-emergency calls such as bed assists;

Assesses patient's vital life processes and carries out Basic Life Support functions;

Drives and operates ambulance safely, including driving code-3; treats and transports patients in accordance with San Diego County Emergency Medical Services protocols and Fire Department policy;

Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports such as equipment and station logs, San Diego County EMS reports and Fire Department records;

Participates in drills;

Participates in self-directed exercise program to maintain physical fitness;

Studies and keeps up to date on city geography, department rules, regulations, procedures and other training and job-related materials;

Stocks medical supplies, ensures equipment is available and functional;

Keeps equipment and ambulance clean and in good working order;

Cleans and maintains fire station and grounds;

Assists with the field orientation of new hire EMTs;

Responds to structure fires, brush fires, and other emergencies, such as hazardous materials incidents to provide support assistance to the Incident Commander;

Provides assistance for specialized functions at a fire or hazardous materials incidents, such as firefighter accountability and/or rehabilitation.

Presents programs and participates in the department's public education program;

Performs Fire Prevention Inspections;

Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
EMT Scope of Practice.
EMS procedures and equipment.
California vehicular laws.
Emergency incident management, specifically the Incident Command System (ICS); principles of incident safety; automatic and mutual aid agreements; hazardous materials procedures.
Hazardous materials, fire prevention procedures and related codes.
Safety principles and practices related to the Fire Service.
Policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the Escondido Fire Department and the City of Escondido.
Geography and street layout of the City and surrounding area.
Laws and regulations pertaining to fire and emergency medical services operations.
Personal Protective Equipment.
Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Algebraic and arithmetic computations.
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Principles and practices of customer service.

Ability to:

Minimum Requirements

Education:
Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
Must be a high school graduate or have passed the G.E.D. test with overall minimum score of 45 and minimum score of 35 on any test.

Experience:
Six months field experience as an EMT-1 is highly desirable.

Licenses / Certificates and Other Requirements:
The following licenses and certificates are required to be maintained throughout employment and are not subject to waiver. To qualify, applicants:


  • Must possess valid EMT-1 certification as defined by the State of California
  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License. Ambulance driver's endorsement NOT required
  • Most possess current CPR certification/card (minimum of healthcare provider)
  • Must be accredited as an EMT-1 in San Diego County at the time of appointment. EMT-1 accreditation must be maintained as a condition of employment.
At the time of application, individuals must be currently certified as an Emergency Medical Technician in San Diego County. At the time of job offer, individuals must be certified in San Diego County. Emergency Medical Technicians certification must be maintained as a condition of continued employment. Escondido Fire Department Emergency Medical Technicians must comply with the San Diego County EMS EMT-1 Guidelines.

Must not have been convicted by a state or by the federal government of a crime, the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in a federal or state prison.
All Fire Department Personnel hired from City of Escondido eligibility lists after January 1, 1989, shall be required to remain a nonsmoker and refrain from the use of any tobacco product throughout their employment as a member of the Escondido Fire Department.

Residency Requirement:
Must reside within a one-hour normal driving time of Fire Station #1, or must comply with the following requirement:
  • Employees shall not be allowed to reside in Mexico.
  • Employees unable to meet departmental requirements for filling overtime on short notice may be ineligible for certain categories of overtime (i.e., sick leave relief, etc.) and
  • Modification of an employee's work schedule in order to mitigate the personal impacts of long-distance commuting will not be permitted.

All applicants will be subject to fingerprint investigation before a conditional offer of employment is extended. A pre-employment medical examination will be conducted following a conditional offer of employment for all positions. Safety sensitive positions will include a pre-employment drug screen. Positions subject to the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations will be subject to DOT pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Applications will be screened and the most qualified candidates will be invited to appear for testing. All positions require the ability to read, write and speak English. Types of tests may include written and/or oral examination, physical agility, practical exam or other appropriate job-related selection process. When testing is completed, candidates will be ranked on an eligibility list in the order of their test score. Selection for appointments is made from names certified on the eligibility list.

All appointments are subject to the successful completion of background investigation including LIVESCAN fingerprinting, and will be required to submit verification of the legal right to work in the United States. Qualification by a medical examination will be required at the time of appointment. After appointment, classified employees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period to be eligible for regular status. In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all new employees must produce proof of eligibility to work in the United States within the first three days of their employment. The City of Escondido participates in E-Verify®.

The Loyalty Oath will be administered to all new employees on their first day of hire. New employees hired into positions that require a driver's license must provide proof of a valid California Driver's License of the appropriate class level on their first day of employment.
