OVERVIEW OF DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITES:
Under the supervision of the Regional Director or designee, the selected candidate will manage Allegany Region’s Environmental Education & Interpretation / Recreation Department. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Supervises, evaluates, and schedules all assigned permanent and seasonal staff, ensuring compliance with established performance standards, policies, and procedures.
· Manages assigned budgets and ensures that all expenditures are necessary, all purchasing guidelines are followed, and all appropriate procedures are followed for reconciling and documenting transactions.
· Supervises, designs, and plans environmental education programs for schools, teachers, special groups, and the public by assessing needs, developing plans and educational goals, overseeing and evaluation programs, requesting and allocating resources for program implementation, and engaging alternate sources of funding.
· Works closely with all facility managers to collaborate and develop appropriate facility specific environmental education and recreational programming on a routine basis.
· Ensures that subordinate staff are scheduled properly and within budgetary constraints to deliver programming in each facility on a schedule agreed upon by each facility manager.
· Attends all Regional Management meetings, reports out on departmental activities and issues, and ensures that all pertinent directives and information are delivered to subordinate staff and enforced.
· Manages digital and print media to advance public outreach.
· Evaluates current programs, teaching and publicity materials, exhibits, and collections, determines needs for revisions and modification, and supervises the implementation of new and revised programs and materials.
· Develops, manages, and implements interpretive material and exhibits at all facilities within the Allegany Region.
· Manages departmental interns and ensures that the assigned housing is utilized in an appropriate manner adhering to Agency and Regional policies and procedures.
· As part of the park management team, contributes to the execution of large events including but not limited to, Allegany Nature Pilgrimage, First Day Hike, I Love My Park Day, etc.
· Coordinates the delivery of targeted programming to groups visiting facilities through programs/events such as Ladders to the Outdoors, Connect Kids, Get Outdoors and Get Together Day, etc.
· Works with Natural Resources Stewardship team to contribute to the public education of stewardship issues and management in park facilities.
· Manages Camp Allegany Education and Recreation Camp schedule and programming in consultation with Park Management.
· Ensures that Camp Allegany Education & Recreation Camp, including staff spaces, are utilized in an appropriate manner and in collaboration with Park Management.
· Attends management training as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
For Permanent Appointment:
Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as an Environmental Educator 1, G-14;
For Provisional Appointment:
1. four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional/technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education*
OR
2. two years of the experience described above AND 60 college semester credit hours, including at least 24 college semester credit hours in biology (for the purpose of these examinations, courses that focus on the study of domesticated or farm animals or humans are not qualifying), earth science, ecology, environmental education, environmental science, field natural history, forestry, geology, marine science, natural resources interpretation, or soil science. You MUST submit a list of qualifying courses with your application, including course title, number of semester credits per course, name of college or university, and the date of completion.
OR
3. a bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences, environmental education, environmental science, forestry, or natural resources interpretation.
Candidates must also have two years of additional experience in environmental education. “Environmental education" is defined as teaching about or interpreting the natural world, the principles of ecology, natural resources management, and environmental quality management. It deals with the interrelationships of plants, animals, and the non-living environment and emphasizes human interactions with these components.
Examples of Acceptable Experience: Experience as a naturalist at a nature setting; an instructor in an environmental education program; or as a designer of environmental education programs for youth organizations such as scouting groups, 4 H clubs, YMCA, etc.
Examples of Non-qualifying Experience: Experience as a teacher of courses such as chemistry, physics, and biology; as a youth leader who carries out pre-established programs; or as a leader of outings for a conservation organization, etc.
Provisional employees must take and pass the next Civil Service Examination for Environmental Educator 2, G-18, and be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for permanent appointment.
